Falcons lose close matches to Ball State

Bowling Green State University volleyball took on the MAC West-leading Ball State Cardinals on Friday at the Stroh Center.

Each of the three sets was settled by four points or fewer in the match with Ball State taking the win. The Falcons were led on the court by Jaden Walz who led the team in both assists (18) and digs (12) to log her ninth double-double of the season. As for the attack, Lauryn Hovey registered a team-high 16 kills for the Falcons.

The loss moves Bowling Green to 14-9 on the season and 9-3 within the Mid-American Conference.

How It Happened

Set 1: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 21

The first set began back-and-forth with Ball State slowly building a lead before a Bowling Green timeout with the score at 11-6.

The trading of points continued between the Falcons and Cardinals up to the next stoppage, coming via Bowling Green timeout.

The Falcons put together a 3-0 run later in the set to force Ball State to use a timeout with the score at 21-16 Cardinals.

Two more points for the Falcons out of the timeout pushed the run to 5-0 and brought about the second Ball State timeout of the set with the score at 21-18.

The Falcons continued to push through the set, but the Cardinals held on for a 25-21 first set win.

Set 2: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 23

The second set began close with ties going to 10-10 before a 3-0 run put the Falcons out in front 13-10 and forced a timeout from the Cardinal bench.

Bowling Green was able to maintain the lead into the next stoppage. A 3-0 run for Ball State forced a timeout from the Falcons with BGSU leading 19-17.

Another 3-0 run for Ball State later in the set brought the score to a 21-21 tie with Bowling Green using their second timeout.

Ball State moved out in front 24-21, but the Falcons tallied two points to bring it to 24-23 and force a timeout from the Cardinals.

Ball State registered the next point out of the timeout to take the second set 25-23.

Set 3: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 22

The Falcons used a 3-0 run to take a 14-12 lead before Ball State tied it up at 14-14. A service error for the Cardinals granted BGSU a 15-14 lead at the media timeout.

Ball State logged the next three points out of the timeout to take a 17-15 lead and force a Falcon timeout.

A 4-1 stretch late in the set put Ball State up 22-20 with Bowling Green calling timeout.

The Cardinals were able to hold on for a 25-22 set win to take the match 3-0.

Jaden Walz tallied her team-leading ninth double-double of the season, leading the team in both assists (18) and digs (12). The double-double is the 24th by a Falcon this season.

Hovey led the attack for the Falcons with 16 kills, coming just one shy of matching her career-high.

Indrova made 35 attack attempts on the night, bringing her career total to 3,373 to move into ninth on the all-time career attack attempts list. Indrova passed Danielle Tonyan who registered 3,354 from 2010-13. Indrova ended the night with eight kills and 11 digs.

Andrews led the Falcons at the net with five total blocks. Andrews logged a solo block along with four block assists.

The Falcons will be back at the Stroh Center on Saturday for the Battle of I-75. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. with trick or treat on the concourse beginning at 3 p.m. as part of the Voll-oween theme. There will also be autographs after the game with the match being the Meserve Cup as well.
