Ohio officials: First human case of West Nile virus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio health officials are confirming the first human case of West Nile virus in the
state this year.
The
state Department of Health says the virus was confirmed Friday in an
85-year-old man at a hospital in Clermont County, near Cincinnati.
The
agency says they are seeing a large increase in mosquitoes carrying the
virus in pockets of the state. More than 370 mosquito pools have tested
positive for the virus so far this year, a jump from under 60 around
this time last year.
Officials say the early increase is similar
to activity in 2002, when there were almost 300 positive mosquito pools
by the end of July.
Ohio has recorded human cases of the virus each year since 2002. There were 21 cases last year.
