Members of the Senior Fair Board were welcomed to the June meeting on Thursday with a stark reminder
“Only 39 days left.”
Few people outside those directly involved realize how many details must be attended to for the annual
summer classic simply called “the fair” by many as well as formally known as the Wood County Fair.
This year’s edition will run Aug. 2-8 at the fairgrounds located at the corner of Poe and Haskins Road.

Thursday’s meeting was dominated with discussion about and tending to many of those important details.

Bill Kale, chairman of the grounds committee thanked and updated the board on the work days held for the
ongoing work in the grandstands.
A leak in the roof was found and taken care of. After two more workdays, dates still to be finalized,
they should have all the work planned for the seats in the grandstands completed.
Once this year’s project is finished, approximately one-half of the bleachers will have been replaced
and/or refurbished.
Kale also sought and received approval for the purchase of welcome flags to be used at the entrance gates
to replace similar aging banners. Other cosmetic changes were approved including work to the tractor and
the purchase of a blower/sweeper to clean up the fairgrounds.
The board also will clarify the names of entry gates. On one map two different gates had the same
designation.
Treasurer Dale Brown asked and received permission from the board to limit the lunch or one-h-our refund
passes to the primary meal times of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.
The idea of the passes was to encourage people to support the fair’s vendors by coming to the fairgrounds
to grab a meal. When the special pass was purchased, the person could leave within the hour and get a
refund of their gate admission price.
Brown said people may have been abusing the promotion and it was his goal to focus the plan to its
intended use of allowing people to come to the fairgrounds to grab a meal without having to pay a gate
admission.
Details were not finalized, but a special stamp or a special color for the stamp may be put into use to
assist those who tend the gates recognize those who purchase the alternate entry pass.
The board approved the donation and will install a second vent fan for the Fine Arts Building. The
donation is being made by the Woodworker’s Guild.
The board also approved the donation of restroom stall dividers and other bathroom supplies from closed
Bowling Green schools.
Representatives of the Junior Fair Board reminded their senior counterparts about supporting the
fundraiser to be held Wednesday at McDonald’s on South Main St. from 4 to 7 p.m.
The youth will be providing volunteer labor with the restaurant donating a portion of the proceeds from
those hours to the Junior Fair program.
The board also were involved in verifying contracts signed and ready to go for all judges, as well as
confirming details of the communication radios and golf carts for the board’s use during the fair. The
board approved matters regarding trash and manure handling and removal.
The entertainment committee reported sales are going well for the concert featuring Chris Young and Steel
Magnolia.
Those who handle the manure from the livestock barns should check with barn supervisors regarding a new
roll-off manure handling program for this year.
The board feels the new procedure will be easier and cleaner, however, there can be no trash mixed with
the manure. Cooperation will be needed from all those involved.
The board also discussed some movement logistics involved in the area between the grandstand and the
Administration Building, as well as a new location for the pony rides.
Petitions were distributed to those board members who will be seeking re-election this year.
The last meeting before the fair will be held July 21 at 7:30 p.m. This will be a joint meeting with the
Junior Fair Board and will be held at the Junior Fair Building.
