PERRYSBURG – In April, the mock trial team from Perrysburg Junior High School traveled to the State
Judicial Center in Columbus to participate in the Ohio Middle School Mock Trial State Showcase sponsored
by the Ohio Center for Law Related Education.
The team participated in two trials based on events from the novel "The True Confessions of
Charlotte Doyle" by Avi. The students played the roles of witnesses, bailiff and attorneys on both
the prosecution and defense sides of the trial. They were responsible for sorting through the evidence,
preparing the arguments, questioning witnesses, responding to questions as witnesses and adhering to the
rules of courtroom procedure.
Members of the OCLRE, who acted as judges for the trials, scored the teams based on their performance. Of
the 30 schools that participated in this event, the PJHS team was one of only seven schools to receive
the highest ranking of "superior."
This is the second year that PJHS has sponsored a mock trial team. Its members included Sarah Kulmatycki,
Emma Hayward, Chandler Kitson, Alexandra Phlegar, Alisha O’Hanian, Alyssa Leong, Nehal Methi, Sara King,
Ryan McConnell, Will Robinson, Kaity Laumann and Areeb Ahmed.
