Gibson’s bond reduced to $50G

Bond has been modified for a former high school coach accused of rape.

Zachary Gibson, 32, appeared Thursday for a bond revocation hearing in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Joel Kuhlman.

He was transported from the jail after being arrested last week on allegations he had been in contact with a minor and with an alleged victim – both acts that were prohibited as part of the conditions of his release from custody in January.

Doug Hartman, senior investigator with the Wood County Prosecutor’s Office, testified that a family had contacted adult probation to report Gibson had been in contact via Snapchat with a 17-year-old in Allen County.

The juvenile told Hartman he had been receiving Gibson’s workout videos for a couple of years.

Gibson is a former strength and conditioning coach who worked at Bowling Green High School. He was never employed by the district.

He has been accused of multiple sexual offenses, including rape, against juveniles in Wood County.

Wood County Assistant Prosecutor Charles McDonald pointed out the similarities with the Wood County allegations, where Gibson has also shared videos.

Hartman said the Snapchat conversations started Jan. 28, less than two weeks after he had been released from jail.

Gibson had been placed on house arrest Jan. 16 with the conditions he have no contact with minors or any alleged victims.

Hartman testified that Gibson had contacted the minor, who posted he was an aspiring bodybuilder, on Instagram.

Gibson had “liked” the juvenile’s photos and videos, Hartman said.

Defense attorney Christopher Lawence objected to any Instagram evidence, as only Snapchat and TikTok were included in allegations made at last week’s hearing.

On cross examination, Hartman told defense attorney Sara Roller he had presented the prosecution with the Instagram posts late last week.

“They’ve been sprung on us,” Lawrence said about the Instagram posts.

Kuhlman sustained this objection.

Hartman also testified that Gibson had viewed the online TikTok profile of one of the alleged victims from Wood County. The screenshot was provided to his office by a family member.

Lawrence also argued that his client’s due process rights had been violated, as the defense had not been provided with the identities of the persons making the allegations and Gibson had not been provided the opportunity to face his accusers.

“Mr. Gibson’s liberty is at stake here,” he said.

Kuhlman overruled this objection and said Hartman was allowed to provide hearsay evidence.

During cross examination, Roller grilled Hartman on his knowledge of the three online platforms in question.

She pointed out Hartman couldn’t ascertain who reached out to whom, who ended the conversations and whether Gibson blocked the Allen County juvenile upon learning his age.

McDonald pointed out Gibson had sent a message that was sexual in nature to the 17-year-old before the conversation was deleted and the juvenile blocked Gibson.

For TikTok, Roller pointed out in order to block someone, you have the click on the profile which will send an alert to the account holder that the profile had been viewed.

Hartman could only confirm Gibson had clicked on the alleged victim’s profile.

McDonald asked Kuhlman to reinstate the original bond of $200,000, with no 10% allowed.

Kuhlman modified bond to $50,000 with 10% allowed. If posted, Gibson is to be on house arrest, have no contact with any minors or alleged victims, and have no access to the internet.

He was first indicted in June 2022 for two counts of sexual battery, two counts of illegal use of a minor or impaired person in nudity-oriented material or performance and attempted illegal use of a minor or impaired person in nudity-oriented material or performance.

He was indicted again in April 2023 for three counts of rape, six counts pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor or impaired person, three counts gross sexual imposition, one count disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, illegal administration or distribution of anabolic steroids, importuning, and two counts failure to comply with underage alcohol laws.
