Johnson’s 35 points lead Fostoria past Lake, 66-61

MILLBURY — Fostoria broke open a close game down the stretch to defeat Lake, 66-61, in Northern Buckeye Conference boys basketball Friday behind 35 points and six steals by Machi Johnson.

The game was tied 35-35 at the half, and the Flyers led by one heading into the final quarter, but the Redmen outscored the Flyers, 18-12, over the final eight minutes.

Travis Merrill, who had four three-point goals, led Lake with 19 points, Dylan Wiley scored 15, Drew Tajblik scored eight, Preston Snyder scored six, Carter Behlmer scored five, and Caleb Tobias and Jay Blazevich scored four apiece.

For Fostoria, Jordan Ferguson had a double-double 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Jayceon Tucker scored 10 points, Kristian Carter-Stokes scored five points, Trent Smith scored three, Lance Miller scored two, and Ryan O’Neal had one point.

Fostoria had a 30-23 advantage off the glass, the Redmen had 16 turnovers to the Flyers’ 19, and from inside the arc, Fostoria shot 60% (25-for-42) and Lake shot 60% (18-for-30).

From outside the arc, Fostoria made 2-for-17 (12%), Lake made 6-of-22 (27%), and Fostoria was 10-for-16 (63%) from the free throw line and Lake was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Fostoria improves to 1-1 overall and in NBC play, Lake falls to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NBC.
