Goyer announces candidacy for BGCS board

Steven “Steve” Goyer has announced his candidacy for a seat in the Bowling Green City School District Board of Education in the Nov. 7 general election.

Goyer is originally from Marion, where he farmed. He earned the State Farmers Degree from his livestock involvement in FFA work. As treasurer, he was awarded first place in district competition for accurate record keeping from among 26 school districts. Steve served honorable in the 136th artillery battalion of the Ohio National Guard (1964-1970) as Battery Clerk specialist 5 in a 103-member unit.

He joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1962, serving 30 years in various capacities. Some of these included Railway Postal Clerk (Chicago-New York), data systems mgmt. officer, and manager, budget and cost. These various experiences allowed him to have a fresh perspective of needs as opposed to wants. Goyer was awarded “Outstanding Supervisor” plaque in 1981 from all federal agencies. He served on various audit teams in Boston, Chicago, Providence, Raleigh, and Washington, DC. Presently, Goyer is employed by Meijer having served in Loss Prevention and Electronics divisions for the past 27 years.

He serves on the finance committee at First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green and was treasurer of FUMC for seven years (2016-2022). During this period, he successfully secured two PPP government grants for FUM to maintain financial security during the pandemic. It was important to maintain priorities when making decisions on how best to appropriate expenditures.

As he reflects upon his own experiences it was always important to recognize the accomplishments and abilities of those who worked with him. Many individuals had important successes of their own going forward. This happened because they were encouraged to put forward their own ideas for the inclusion of all concerned.

Success is defined by the accomplishment of those around you.

Goyer’s platform is for inclusion and common sense:

• Measure our expenditures against the priority needs of our community. It is critical that our approach has the broad support of all segments of our community. We’re in this together.

• Prioritize our needs to ensure our students are gaining the best options for their continued success. We have so many resources to tap into including our BGSU partners, business community, and city administrative offices. Our teachers are giving such an outstanding support it sometimes seems it needs to be highlighted as truly inspirational.

• Sponsor ideas which will give added value to the accomplishments of our students and (as well) teaching staff. Partner with BGSU for educational support; publish a semi-annual paper to address ongoing needs and concerns that need addressed; find areas to engage the community to be inclusive which will have a positive impact for all parties.

• Be genuinely inclusive of ideas forwarded so that our emphasis is focused upon community. Recognize our past differences and all work together toward inclusiveness rather than what divides us. Understand that each of us must be willing to listen to our better selves.

• Have respect for the ideas of others beside your own.

Goyer and his wife, Maxine have been married for 57 years and reside in Bowling Green. He may be reached at: [email protected]. He welcomes suggestions and comments as we move forward.
