Jacobs’ 50th family reunion

PEMBERVILLE — The Jacobs’ 50th family reunion was held at the American Legion Hall July 23. There were 58 descendants in attendance. There were 10 children in George and Bessie Jacobs’ family – Edith, Elmer, Walter, Myrtle, Florence, Elsie, Alice, Ruth, Lois and Harley.

From these 10, there were 38 first cousins. Fourteen are deceased. Sixteen of the 24 remaining cousins attended with their families. The oldest cousin who attended was Jim Hummel who will be 86 in August. When the reunion started in 1973, it was held in the pavilion right next to the legion hall. Tables and chairs had to be set up outside the pavilion to host the 80-plus who came.

Mark Jacobs, with the help of other relatives, barbecued over 60 chicken halves, continuing the tradition that his father, Harley, had begun many years before, using the same recipe which was once featured in the cook booklet that the Sentinel Tribune issues once a year. Relatives provided salads, main dishes, soups, rolls and desserts.

After the meal, a picture of the cousins was taken, followed by family pictures, a short business meeting, a Chinese raffle and then bingo. The next reunion will be July 28, 2024.
