With advice to remain curious, bold and kind, Bowling Green State University President Rodney Rogers recognized Ph.D. candidates on Friday in the first hooding ceremony at the university.

The ceremony kicked off graduation weekend at BGSU with an event that gives the doctoral candidates recognition and is becoming more common at universities nationwide.

“The hooding ceremony is unbelievably special. There is just such excitement going on about campus, so that our doctoral candidates know that they are valued and welcomed on their accomplishments,” said Dean of the Graduate College Jennifer Waldron, Ph.D.

Lindsay Hamilton, Ph.D. in Psychology, receives her doctoral hood from her faculty adviser Dara Musher-Eizenman, Ph.D., right, and Dean of the Graduate College Jennifer Waldron, Ph.D.

First to be conferred the symbol — which is unique to recipients of a Ph.D. — Mark Heider, Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, spoke about what the degree means to him.

“It’s just a great accomplishment. I can’t believe I made it this far. It took me eight years to get here, through COVID and everything else, with lots of struggles,” Heider said. “I’ve worked for BGSU for 25 years now and I decided to get the degree to get to contribute more to the university.”

He currently works as a server administrator in the information technology services area.

The first in line, Mark Heider, Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, receives his doctoral hood from his faculty adviser Kenneth Borland, Ph.D., behind, as Dean of the Graduate College Jennifer Waldron, Ph.D. assists.

Amanda Heitcamp received her Ph.D. in Sociology. Her dissertation was on deviance victimization.

“It’s an accumulation of the last four years of hard work,” Heitcamp said about the hooding ceremony. “I am going to miss BGSU.”

She will be heading off to Troy University in Alabama.

Her faculty adviser had kind words.

“To have an event like this, where we can recognize the doctoral students is just amazing,” Thomas Mowen, Ph.D., said.
