Toledo man sentenced to jail for assaulting former Wood County woman

A Toledo man has been sentenced for attempted felonious assault.

Jared Sutphin’s victim spoke for 30 minutes Tuesday in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Matt Reger.

Sutphin, 24, pleaded guilty in February to the amended charge of attempted felonious assault, a third-degree felony.

“The plea he took is a slap in the face to me as the victim,” the woman said.

Charges of rape and gross sexual imposition were dismissed.

The victim said Sutphin used her body without her permission at a friend’s house where she thought she was safe.

She said she has not seen remorse from Sutphin and every time she has retold her story, she has relived the horror.

She walked into Toledo Hospital with bruises on her neck and mascara running down her face. Her body had become a crime scene, she said.

“I was embarrassed and ashamed,” she said.

She has been diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety keeps her awake and she has severe depression. She has since moved away from Wood County.

She asked for a prison sentence with mandatory counseling.

“I do regret the actions I did that day,” Sutphin said.

Sutphin was indicted in March 2022 for felonious assault, a second-degree felony; rape, a first-degree felony; and gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony.

On June 2, 2021, Sutphin attempted to cause physical harm to the victim by means of a deadly weapon, which was a knife.

The charge that he engaged in sexual conduct with the woman by purposely compelling her to submit by force was dismissed.

“You were a man she should have been safe around,” Reger said to Sutphin.

“She should have been. She’s 100% accurate. She should have been safe,” Sutphin said.

Sutphin reportedly has studied law enforcement and is in the military.

Reger said that a large amount of alcohol was consumed prior to the offense. Sutphin in his presentence investigation indicated he has continued to consume alcohol in large amounts, Reger said.

Sutphin said he stopped drinking for months after the incident and then slowly began again.

Sutphin has no prior offenses and avoided possible serious ramifications by pleading to the amended charge, Reger said.

“Our judgment of right and wrong in regard to sexual encounters, hinges on consent,” he said.

Reger imposed a sentence of 180 days in jail followed by five years community control.

Furloughs will be allowed for Marine Corps service as long as Sutphin remains in the corps.

Reger asked if Sutphin had informed his commanding officer of this charge. Sutphin said no.

Reger said he could have chosen 36 months in prison, which could happen if Sutphin violates the community control sanctions by drinking alcohol.

“This court believes alcohol was an essential part of this offense,” Reger said.

If drinking continues, Sutphin will go to prison, Reger said.

Sutphin must pay $1,325 in restitution within one year.
