The 2023 Hansen Musical Arts Series at Bowling Green State University presents the Kronos Quartet at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in Kobacker Hall in a concert that is free and open to the public.
Kronos has performed thousands of concerts worldwide, released more than 70 recordings and collaborated with many of the world’s most accomplished composers and performers across many genres.
For nearly 50 years, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet, comprising David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola) and Paul Wiancko (cello), has reimagined what the string quartet experience can be. Kronos has received more than 40 awards, including three Grammys and the Polar Music, Avery Fisher and Edison Klassiek Oeuvre Prizes.

During the quartet’s time in Bowling Green and the region, the four musicians are working with BGSU College of Musical Arts student composers and doctoral students as well as giving master classes to university string quartets. Kronos musicians also are working with the Perrysburg High School orchestra.
The Dorothy E. and DuWayne H. Hansen Musical Arts Series Fund was established in 1996 to bring to the campus and community significant representatives of the musical arts to share their talents with undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Musical Arts and with residents of the community. Dorothy Hansen is an alumna of the College of Musical Arts, while DuWayne Hansen is a former chair of the Department of Music Education.
Through its nonprofit organization, Kronos Performing Arts Association, Kronos has commissioned more than 1,000 works and arrangements for quartet. KPAA also manages Kronos’ concert tours, local performances, recordings and education programs and produces an annual Kronos Festival in San Francisco.
In its most ambitious commissioning effort to date, KPAA has recently completed “50 for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire.” Through this initiative, Kronos has commissioned — and distributed online for free — 50 new works for string quartet designed for students and emerging professionals, written by composers from around the world.
