New BG High School will cost $1 a day: It’s worth it

To the Editor:

On Tuesday, a conclusion will be rendered concerning the construction of a new high school in Bowling Green. Much of the discussion has centered around the cost and affordability of such an undertaking. The $70 million project is spread out over 30 years, along with a seven-year income and estate tax. Property values and annual income determine what portion a taxpayer is obligated to contribute.

Before getting too deeply into the expense of this project one should consider several factors:

The existing high school is approximately 60 years old with very limited classroom capacity and outlets for modern hookups now in wide usage.

Five years ago, the cost of financing was greatly less than what is available today. As time goes forward the community may expect these expenses to rise and thus diminish the value expected versus financing presently.

One of the qualities evaluated in a community is the value of a school system. Academic achievement opportunities are measured by the quality of education offered. People are attracted to a community by a high quality school base. When families move in, it causes property values to increase and enhances the overall tax base.

The average median household income for Wood County in 2021 is $63,620, costing a family an average of $318.10 year for seven years.

The average home value in Bowling Green is $196,673 in 2021, equaling a payment of $276.50 per year for 30 years. Putting this in context:

Cost to typical homeowner:

Income tax = $318.10 for seven years – $2,226.70

Property tax = $276.50 for 30 years – $8,295.00

Total expense: $10,521.70 (over 30-year period)

Total expense average per year: $350.72

Total cost per day average is 96 cents

Obviously, one size does not fit all, but it does put into context what is being requested. Those on the higher spectrum of ownership/income will expect to pay somewhat higher although certainly less if proceeding now instead of later. And those less fortunate will pay much less while gaining the opportunity to have a better academic environment for the future.

For less than a cup of coffee a day from McDonald’s ($1), you have the chance to invest in our community and the children of our future.

Please take time to vote “yes” for the school levy.
