Lake takes Black and Gold championship

PERRYSBURG — Lake won the eight-team Black and Gold Tournament championship, which had four state ranked teams playing.

Lake defeated Columbus St. Francis DeSales 25-17, 25-7 in the quarterfinals and Perrysburg, 13-25, 25-21, 25-21, in the semifinals.

The Flyers took the championship against Liberty-Benton, 25-19, 29-27, to stay undefeated at 16-0.

Before the tournament, Liberty-Benton was ranked eighth in Division II, Lake was 13th in D-II, Newark Catholic was seventh in D-IV and Wapakoneta was 18th in D-I.

Perrysburg, DeSales, Avon, and Solon were unranked by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association.

Perrysburg opened by defeating Newark Catholic, 26-24, 16-25, 25-18.

Perrysburg 2nd, 4th at Mustang Invitational

STRONGSVILLE — The Perrysburg girls cross country team finished second and the boys fourth at the Strongsville Mustang Invitational Saturday.

In the girls race, Westlake won the championship, scoring 57 points, followed by Perrysburg (82), Beavercreek (133), Revere (163) and Strongsville (178) among the top five teams.

Perrysburg sophomore Ava Beeks was fourth in 18:28.55 and sophomore Natalie Sanders was eighth in 18:56.43

Other Perrysburg runners were junior Sydney Daudelin (19:32.98), junior Taylor Moody (19:37.02), senior AnnaSophia Gower (19:41.55), junior Hannah Kersten (19:55.16), and senior Sage Colon (20:09.29).

Sophomore Anthony Clark led the Perrysburg boys team with a seventh-place finish in 15:55.8.

Rounding out Perrysburg’s runners were junior A.J. Bohman (16:26.95), junior Ethan Laeng (16:27.93), senior Andrew Beeks (16:48.11), senior Carter Fry (16:53.6), freshman Brody Bauman (16:54.34) and senior Ryan Montross (16:59.85).

Chardon won the boys race with 102 points, followed by Solon (124), Mount Gilead (135), Perrysburg (139), Hudson (194), Beavercreek (207), Cleveland St. Ignatius (219), Twinsburg (256), and Brunswick (270) and University School (304) in the top 10.

The next 10 were Westlake (306), Strongsville (322), Canfield (356), Copley (375), Amherst Steele (381), Lakewood (382), Akron Hoban (409), North Olmsted (414), Massillon Perry (439), Parma Notre Dame Cathedral Latin (503) and Chagrin Falls (606),

Rounding out the team scores were Cuyahoga Heights Walsh Jesuit (631) and Olmsted Falls (638), and Nordonia, Euclid and Villa Angela St. Joseph did not have enough runners for a team score.

In the girls race, teams six through 16 were Brunswick (179), Hudson (185), Rocky River (202), Bay Village (213), Massillon Perry (331), Lakewood (351), Canfield (357), Beaumont (395), Chagrin Falls (407), Olmsted Falls (424) and Solon (436).

The remaining teams were Twinsburg (438), Copley (456), Mount Gilead (466), North Olmdsted (501) and Hoban (581), and NDCL and Nordonia did have enough runners for team scores.

The Jackets return to action Saturday in Hilliard at the Midwest Meet of Champions.

Bowling Green 2, Defiance 0

DEFIANCE — Bowling Green girls soccer got goals from Shayle Greiner and Sophia Burtnett and an assist by Maddy Adams as the Bobcats defeated Defiance, 2-0, Saturday.

BG improves to 5-6 while Defiance remains winless in 10 games.
