ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) — A judge has sentenced a northeast Ohio man to life in prison for killing a man
during an argument over $150 owed in a marijuana deal.
The judge in Ashtabula County sentenced 22-year-old Denzil Yates on Tuesday after a jury convicted him
last month in the March 2013 slaying of James Anderson.
Police said Yates and Anderson fought over about $150 that Yates owed for a pot purchase.
The (Ashtabula) Star-Beacon (http://bit.ly/1pN2QWp) reports that Yates testified he shot Anderson because
he was convinced Anderson was going to kill him, and harm his sister and mother. Yates said he ran away
afterward because he was afraid authorities wouldn’t believe his story.
Yates will be eligible for parole after 21 years.
