Spooked by football conflict, Walbridge moves trick or treat

WALBRIDGE – Frightened of causing a conflict with the high school football game, local officials are
transferring trick or treat to the day before Halloween.
Village council approved having trick or treat on Oct. 30, a Thursday, at Wednesday’s meeting. They said
the Lake Township Trustees are expected to take the same action at their regular meeting on Tuesday.
Sue Hart-Douglas, chairwoman of the parks, recreation and community events committee, said regular trick
or treat on Friday, Oct. 31, would conflict with the Lake High School football team’s last home game of
the season. The Flyers take on Fostoria on Oct. 31.
After the meeting, Mayor Ed Kolanko said not everyone would be pleased by the trick or treat move.
"Whenever you change it, I think you’ll get some flack," he said. "But given the community
we live in and Lake schools … it felt like the right change to make."
Trick or treat will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
In other business, Kolanko said he is confident about the village’s chances of getting state money for
phase three of a Union Street improvement project.
A decision on the Ohio Public Works State Capital Improvement Grant, also known as Issue 1, could be made
by next month. The grant would fund half of the $480,000 project.
Kolanko said the village is in the top three out of 23 projects.
After the meeting, he said the project has received so much support because it is a good one that
encompasses a lot of improvements. Kolanko said the village also pledges half of the money toward the
work, which is well received.
Walbridge has already received $209,000 for phase one and $262,000 for phase two of the project, which
entails repaving, updating sewers and installing new curbs on Union Street from Main Street to
Martendale Place.
Also at the meeting, council:
• Approved with four yes votes an ordinance making changes to the rules of council. Some of the changes
include allowing public comment during the meeting and reducing the salary of a council member who is
absent and unexcused. Ken Gilsdorf and Larry Boday voted no. After the meeting, Gilsdorf said he had
talked with representatives from other villages and thought that the absence rules could be re-worded.

• Approved a request from Pat Chafin, with the auxiliary for VFW Post 9963, for members to post ribbons
in honor of veterans around the village during November.
• Heard Hart-Douglas say her committee met with the president of the Lake Soccer Club about making soccer
fields at Loop and Railway parks.
• Approved allowing St. Jerome Catholic Church the use of the village streets during its 5K run on Nov.
8.
• Heard the budget and finance committee will meet Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the town hall.
