GENOA – Lake’s Austin Fouty pitched a three-hit shutout as Lake blanked Genoa, 6-0, Wednesday afternoon
in a Northern Buckeye Conference baseball matchup.
The Flyers are now 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the NBC. Genoa, who was picked in a vote of the coaches to win
the league, is 4-2, 0-2.
“Fouty did a great job for us,” Lake’s veteran head coach Greg Wilker said. “He had a nice curveball
going and spotted the fastball. He kept them off balance.”
Fouty struck out nine and did not walk a batter. He scattered three singles and also had a runner reach
on an error. Fouty threw 94 pitches while facing 25 batters over seven innings.
“It was a good win. I hit my spots really well,” Fouty said, adding this was probably the best game he
has pitched in his career. “I commanded my fastball a lot and I was hitting my spots, that’s what helped
me out. A lot of pitches I was jamming them, but I also hit the corners.
“It was very important for me since this is my last year as a pitcher and I want to help my team win,” he
added.
Genoa head coach Gary Nissen was impressed with Fouty’s performance.
“He was very, very good today,” Nissen said. “The nice thing he did was that he located really well and
changed speeds. Even early in the count he changed speeds to just keep us off balance.”
Genoa’s Allen Laytart pitched two scoreless innings to start the game, but had to leave the field with a
shoulder injury in the bottom of the second inning.
Laytart reached on a single, but hurt his shoulder while diving back to first place on a kickoff attempt.
Laytart left in a sling for his arm and an ice pack on his right shoulder.
“Obviously things didn’t go as planned today,” Nissen said. “With Allen going down, it kind of hurt.”
Lake scored three times in the third inning, helped by two walks and two errors as the Flyers sent eight
batters to the plate. The first two runs scored on an error and Fouty made it 3-0 with an RBI single.

“When their pitcher got hurt you could see the momentum shift,” Wilker said. “We had to execute some
things and we got some key hits.
“Getting the first two runs, we took advantage of it,” he continued. “It was a big break for getting
those first two and we were able to build on it.”
Harry Jackson hit a booming triple in the fifth inning for Lake and later scored on an error to make it
4-0.
In the sixth inning, Jackson doubled down the third base line to drive in two more runs.
Laytart joins teammates Jacob Stewart and Sam Witt on the injury list.
“Nobody is going to feel sorry for us,” Nissen said. “We are going to find people to come out and play,
step in and fill in and find a way.”
