Falcons falter again at end

Basically the same story and definitely the same result.
With 3:26 remaining, Bowling Green’s women trailed Akron, 61-60 after a layup from Andrea Cecil.
The Zips then outscored the Falcons, 22-13 on the way to an 83-73 victory Wednesday evening in the Stroh
Center.
“I just didn’t think we played very well and that was disappointing,” BG head coach Robin Fralick said.
“We have to clean some things up moving forward … I think we need to put together a much better
40-minute game.
“And credit to Akron, I thought they made some really timely plays.”
Shaunay Edmonds led the Zips onslaught with a career-high 33 points. She hit a 3-pointer just before the
buzzer to give the Zips a 46-44 lead going into the final eight minutes.
“She is a tough matchup. She got going to the rim and from the three and when she does that, that’s hard
to guard,” Fralick said.
Bowling Green held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and was up 24-22 at the half.
The pace picked up in the second half with Akron outscoring BG 61-49, including 37-29 in the fourth
quarter.
In the third quarter, BG expanded its lead to 31-24 with 7:56 left on a layup from Kadie Hempfling, who
finished with a career-high 19 points after being held scoreless in the first half.
Akron quickly made a 7-0 run to tie the game at 31 with 6:55 left.
The game remained close for the rest of the quarter with Akron taking a two-point lead into the final 10
minutes.
The Zips pushed their lead to nine points, 60-51 with 6:06 left to play.
With Cecil scoring nine straight points for the Falcons, it was a one-point Akron lead 61-60.
Akron’s Shayna Harmon quickly hit a 3-pointer, but Maddy Cole made two free throws for the Falcons,
Harmon nailed another triple and Megan Sefcik added a basket to give Akron a 69-62 lead with 2:01 left.

The Zips then sealed the victory going 12-of-12 from the free-throw line in the final 1:45. For the game,
Akron was 24-of-30 on free throws, including a 9-of-9 effort from Harmon.
“We had opportunities to put it away, we just didn’t get the stops or we couldn’t get a bucket to go up
more in crucial times when we should have,” Hempfling said. “We just have to play to win and compete,
fight, hustle plays, everything.
“We just gave them real easy looks. We didn’t get stops when we needed them,” Hempfling added in regard
to Akron’s onslaught in the final minutes. “We have to be smarter with the ball. We have to be able to
pick up each other and lead with each other.”
The Falcons were hit hard by 21 turnovers, which resulted in 20 points by Akron.
“We have to take better care of the basketball. The turnover ratio was 21 to 4. We do it at really tough
times or after we get a stop,” Fralick said.
Cecil led the Falcons with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds. Hempfling added 19 points,
Morgan McMillan finished with 11 points and Sydney Lambert contributed 10 points.
“My teammates just got me the ball, that’s really what it steams from,” Hempfling, a freshman, said. “I
finished around the basket. I really didn’t finish in the first half and I just felt I was letting the
team down.
“We needed those buckets early and I had to fix it for the second half.”
A total of four Akron starters finished in double figures while accounting for 72 of its 73 points. In
addition to Edmonds’ 33 points, Harmon finished with 19, Sefcik scored 18 and Caitlin Van contributed
12. In the first half, Edmonds and Van were Akron’s only scorers.
NOTES: The Falcons are 8-18 overall and 1-14 in the Mid-American Conference … Akron is 16-10, 7-8 … It

the second most in a season at BG. Lauren Prochaska holds the single-season record with 92 … The Falcons
did have a 45-31 rebounding advantage … Bowling Green hosts Kent State Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior
