BGHS grads pursue separate academy careers — but always meet for ‘the game’

U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman Susan Johnson and U.S. Military Academy Cadet Bradley Krupp have been
friends since kindergarten.
They both grew up in Bowling Green and attended Conneaut Elementary and Bowling Green High School,
graduating together in 2015. They shared many classes in high school since they were both on the honor
track. They also ran BGHS cross country together.
Since graduating, Johnson and Krupp have kept in contact sharing their similar experiences at U.S.
Service Academies – Susan in Annapolis, Maryland, and Brad in West Point, New York. They include
Plebe/Beast Summer (basic training), a heavy class load, military knowledge studies and testing, summer
trainings, as-well-as physical endurance training and testing they are required to pass every semester.

Johnson has made several visits to West Point over the last 3 1/2 years for competitions including
piloting an airplane for the USNA Intercollegiate Flight Team in the All Academy Flight Competition held
in West Point. Krupp always welcomes her with personal, inside tours of West Point.
The two also make an effort to get together when they are in Bowling Green for Thanksgiving or Christmas
breaks. Military summer assignments have made it more difficult for them to connect during the summer
but they try to manage at least one visit if their leaves allow.
One reunion they have made every year since entering the Service Academies is each December at the
Army-Navy football game – also known as “America’s game.” The always sold-out game has been played in
NFL stadiums in Philadelphia and Baltimore, Maryland. Krupp and Johnson both have march-on commitments
with their respective academies before the game, but they always meet for some friendly rivalry talk and
a photo op during half time.
Brad will graduate from West Point with a civil engineering degree in May. He will find out where he will
be stationed as an officer, 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army, in February. He served as a
Company Commander of I1, leading 130 fellow classmates in 2018. He is the son of David and Denise Krupp.

Susan will graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy with an aerospace engineering degree in May and will be
commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Susan has been selected as a Navy pilot and will
report to Pensacola, Florida, for flight training. She is president of the Naval Academy Fixed Wing
Training Squadron, member of the USNA Intercollegiate Flight Team and is Battalion Conduct Officer. She
is the daughter of Paul and Laura Johnson.
