The Bowling Green Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal wrong-way crash that
occurred Wednesday on I-280 in Lake Township.
Crews were called to the scene at 12:27 p.m. on reports that a vehicle was involved in a possible head-on
collision, then a roll-over crash on I-280, north of Bahnsen Road.
The patrol reports a red 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Raymond Pacheco Sr., 88, entered I-280 at Ohio
795, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.
Pacheco’s car was struck by a northbound silver 2008 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Wayne Curtis, 68, of
Ottawa Lake, Michigan. Curtis was traveling with a passenger, Steven Smith, 50, also of Ottawa Lake,
Michigan.
Pacheco’s car then went off the road into the median. Pacheco, of Toledo, was not wearing a seatbelt at
the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Curtis and Smith were transported by Lake Township EMS to Bay Park Hospital with injuries that were not
life-threatening.
The patrol was assisted at the scene by Lake Township police and fire, Northwood police and the Ohio
Department of Transportation.
