Obama doing a good job, despite Republican rhetoric

To the Editor:
Praiseworthy. Successful. Accomplishments. These are words you will never hear from the Obama-hating
crowd, whether local or national. And, they are wrong.
While Fox, the GOP, and right wing radio have been fairly quiet since the holidays, they will start
screaming foul at the first opportunity. If they can’t find new incidents, they will bring on the same
old, same old: Benghazi, the IRS, the Affordable Care Act, etc.
At all costs, they will not yield their lies and half-truths to the facts of the Obama presidency. And,
here are some of the facts they should be acknowledging:
On the economic side, unemployment is at 5.6%. Job creation is happening at a record pace. Deficits
continue to fall. Economic growth is at 5%.
On the domestic side, 10 million more Americans are insured. The price of gas is under two dollars. The
stock market is at a historic high. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is working.
On foreign policy, Osama bin Laden was killed. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are coming to a close.
China has agreed to climate change measures. Relations with Cuba are being normalized.
The above is a list of achievements all Americans should be proud of, and it might be more robust if
Republicans would cooperate rather than hold to a philosophy of obstructionism.
Obama is far from perfect. I would like to see more transparency regarding the use of drones. I wish some
bankers would have been prosecuted for the fraud they perpetuated on the American people.
Why do professional Obama-haters go into such a frenzy when the current administration is performing at a
high level? Is it because he is a Democrat? Is it because he leans liberal? Is it because some people
cannot stand the idea of a Black president?
What spawns such anger and denial of facts and evidence is a key question. It is one we must grapple with
if we are to be a better and less-divided America. Barack Obama was elected to be President not once,
but twice. He is our president, and the facts argue that he seems to be doing a pretty good job of it.
