Second-ranked Cleveland St. Ignatius scored the final four goals Sunday for a 6-2 victory over No. 9
Bowling Green in a nonconference high school hockey game at the Ice Arena.
The Wildcats’ goals came in a span of 7:41, starting with Jared Stepka’s game-winning goal at 5:31.
Stepka scored just 24 seconds after BG’s Grant DeWitt tied the game 2-2.
Jack Wiegandt increased the lead to 4-2 at 5:56. The Wildcats’ other goals came from Zack Kisel on the
power play at 7:58 and Jack Mazanec short-handed at 13:32.
“Everything we had done to that point in terms of some of the little mistakes we had been making during
the weekend that cost us games, those mistakes came back to haunt us,” BG coach Dan DeWitt said.
“(St. Ignatius) is a quality team and we think we need to be at that level. We’ve played with teams like
that. We have to turn the page, keep our heads up and get better.”
The teams traded goals in the first period, with Connor Rogowski scoring for BG.
The Wildcats held a 30-25 edge in shots, with eight of BG’s shots coming during a five-minute power play
in the second period.
The Bobcat power play was 0 of 5, failing to score on two-man advantages of 35 seconds in the first
period with the score tied and during the game’s final 1:48.
BG’s Tanner Fausnaugh had 24 saves.
The Bobcats are 11-7-1 overall. St. Ignatius is 15-3-3.
BG dropped a 5-2 decision Saturday to No. 5 Toledo St. John’s in a Northwest Hockey Conference Red
Division game at Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter.
The Bobcats fell behind 2-0 in the first eight minutes and never tied the game.
BG closed within 2-1 and 3-2, but St. John’s scored the next goal each time.
DeWitt and Aaron Crawford scored for BG, and Fausnaugh made 24 saves.
The Bobcats out-shot St. John’s by a 32-29 margin.
BG is 1-3-1 in the NHC.
BG resident Derek Dohanos scored twice for St. John’s (9-6-3, 3-2).
