Area students recognized for writing

The Bowling Green Women’s Club has announced the winners of the
2013 Creative Writing Contest.Amy Rahmel, a third-grade teacher at Crim Elementary, was the contest
coordinator."Many of the poems and stories this year revolved around the four seasons," she
said. "It is always exciting to see the children’s faces light up when their entry is read in front
of the audience."These area children were first-place winners in prose and poetry.First-graders
Madeline Desmond, prose, and Elizabeth Reger, poetry, were recognized. Their teacher is Susan Sweet at
Bowling Green Christian Academy.Hannah Mathey won for prose. Her second-grade teachers at Montessori
School of Bowling Green are Liz Resler and Megan Prybylski.Also in second grade, Robert Cooley studies
poetry with Margie Larson at BGCA.Madeline Northcutt, prose, is a third-grader in Rahmel’s Crim
classroom.Matthew Bowlus, poetry, is a third-grader at BGCA. His teacher is Judy Bowlus.Ally Utz, prose,
is in fourth grade at Kenwood Elementary. Her teacher is Carole Sarkan.In fifth grade at Crim, Hailey
Perez, prose, studies with Brenda Haynes.Lincy Chen, poetry, is in fifth grade at Conneaut Elementary.
Her teacher is Paul Reinhart.Alexa Whyte, poetry, is a Montessori student in sixth grade. Her teachers
are Deb Reddin and Ruth Schroeder.Sara Avery, prose, is an eighth-grader in Brian Dunne’s classroom at
St. Aloysius Catholic School.James Frederick, poetry, is in Erika Slough’s sophomore class at Bowling
Green High School.Tia Newlove, prose, is in the 11th grade at BGHS. Her teacher is Tom Ross.Josie
Benson, prose, was honored. The senior’s teacher at BGHS is Sarah Caserta.Judges were Jean Ladd, Sue
Hess, Dodie Titus, Kathy East, Bobbie Lane, Deb LeGalley, Carol Solether, Bonnie Stearns, Barb
Applebaum, Helene Weinberger and Melanie Stretchbery.The hostess committee included Camille Harris,
Lynette Rosebrook, Elaine McEwen, Mary Boone, Marilyn Riewaldt, Becky Bhaer and Norma Stickler.Singer
Abby Paskvan entertained.
