Ohio fire marshal urges new smoke alarm batteries

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Fire Marshal Larry Flowers isencouraging residents to replace
batteries in their smoke alarms asthey turn their clocks ahead one hour this weekend.Flowers saysthe time
change early Sunday should remind people to switch thebatteries and then test detectors monthly to ensure
they operatecorrectly. He says the cost of a few dollars for each new battery is asmall price for a family’s
safety.Thirty fire fatalities have been reported to the fire marshal’s office this year.Ohiohad 106 reported
fire-related deaths last year, compared with 128 in2011 and 155 in 2010. In more than two-thirds of the 2012
fatalities,homes lacked a smoke detector or it couldn’t be determined whether onewas
