11th Frame: Adjustments can improve scoring (02-12-13)

There are times when almost every veteran bowler gets on a hot streak and other times will go into
a scoring slump.Over the years, this bowler has noticed some of the best scores have come when I was not
feeling 100 percent healthy. Rather than trying to get sick before league, what was learned was that it is
easier to score better when not forcing the ball, but just rolling it naturally. Thus, that is now one of my
points to watch when not scoring as high as normal. With advance computer programs at most area centers, it
is also now possible for a bowler to look and analyze which game is their highest scoring, and similarly
which game they may need to put some focus. In many leagues, the first game has the freshly-dressed lane
conditions. As balls continue rolling down the lane game after game, those conditions change. How fast do
you adjust to the changing conditions? If your second and third games are generally higher, you adjust well.
If your first game is generally your best, you may need to work on adjustments that need to be made during a
league session. If your hot streak spans various leagues and multiple weeks, you must be doing something
right, and enjoy the ride. However, if you are in a lasting slump, you may want to have a professional coach
take a look and see what you may be doing wrong.Very few bowlers have the ability to recognize their own
style errors. A certified coach is trained to look for flaws in your approach, delivery and release.Tweaking
your game a bit may improve your average a few pins. Don’t just sit there and complain or blame the pins or
alleys, look in the mirror and find what the bowler needs to differently.USBC awards: Two bowlers earned
United States Bowling Congress 300 game awards last week, and interestingly ended with identical series.
Larry Long Jr., rolled his 17th career 300 in the American League at Al-Mar Lanes. It was his third game of
the night and he finished with a fine 774 series, including a 258 game. Then, Butch Naugle rolled another
300 game in his career, he added a 246 game for his 774.League ‘lites: In the Elks League on Tuesday at
