NORTH BALTIMORE – The son of a village resident has been honored for saving his father’s
lifeNick Nichols was presented a Lifesaver Award for performing CPR on his father, Richard, on Jan. 12.
The measure probably saved the man’s life, said village Emergency Medical Service Night Captain Luke
Swartz during Tuesday’s village council meeting. On that January night, the village’s emergency
responders received a call of an unresponsive patient, but that CPR was in progress. When EMS arrived to
continue CPR and give two electric shocks, a pulse was regained, explained Swartz."The outcome
wouldn’t have been so good if CPR wasn’t given before our arrival," he stated.Richard Nichols was
transported to Wood County Hospital then air lifted to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.Swartz
presented Nick Nichols with the award, while his father watched.By having the young Nichols do what he
did, Swartz said he hopes other community members will be prompted to learn similar life-saving
measures. That is why the EMS department is hosting a free CPR class on March 10 at 2 p.m. at the
station. No registration is required.
