Eastwood girls seek even more success in regional (05-24-12)

Eastwood’s girls have been achieving their goals weekly this season.
The Eagles are looking for more of the same this week.
They’ll compete in nine events during the Division II regional track and field meet at Lexington High
School today and Saturday, and they’re hoping at least three of their events qualify for the state meet.

Eastwood performed well last week en route to winning a district championship at Oak Harbor High School.
The previous week, the Eagles won their 12th straight league title.
The Eagles’ nine regional event qualifiers were one more than last season.
Among Eastwood’s regional qualifiers are district champions Aricka LaVoy, a junior, in the 200, and the
400 relay team of senior Ericca Hollister, LaVoy, sophomore Maddie Jackson and freshman Reagan Boice.

In the running events, the top two finishers in each semifinal and the next four fastest times,
regardless of heat, advance to the finals.
The top four finishers in each regional event qualify for state.
"The first thing we have to do is we have to insist on making the finals," Eastwood coach Nikki
Sabo said. "If they compete like they can, everyone should make the finals of their events.
"We’re trying to control the things we can and let everything else take care of itself. We worry
about us and performing to the best of our ability. If we do that, that’s all we can ask."
If the Eagles qualify three events to state, it would tie their most ever.
"We’re extremely pleased," Sabo said. "We have a great group of girls. They worked hard
during the offseason and have continued to work hard since the season started. The results are starting
to show. We have some school records in jeopardy and some of the girls are getting in the school’s
all-time top 10 of their events."
Eastwood’s 400 relay team won the district in 50.87, just off the school record of 50.24.
The 1,600 relay team Jackson, Boice, Hollister and LaVoy was second in the district in 4:08.85. The
school record is 4:06.6. LaVoy also was fourth in the long jump.
"The coaches have told us to work for our goals and what we want to accomplish," said
Hollister, a regional qualifier in the 100 where she finished third in the district. "The workouts
are great because we keep getting stronger and stronger throughout the season, and helps our confidence
get higher and higher. We want to get better every day."
The other district champions from Wood County competing in the regional are Lake junior Rebecca Boos, who
won the 100 and will compete in three other events; and Rossford’s 800 relay team of senior Shayna
Lindley, and sophomores Julie Hotz, Jessie Pietrasz and Courtney Morris.
Boos also was second in the 200, and ran on Lake’s third-place 800 and 400 relay teams.
Lake’s 800 relay team consists of Boos, freshman Jordyn Taylor, junior Ashley Timmons and sophomore
Nicole Pennington. The 400 team consists of Boos, senior Hunter Johnson, Timmons and Pennington.
"My goal is to get to state in all of my events," Boos said. "I know it won’t be easy, but
I’m going to try to my best in every race."
Rossford’s 800 meter relay team won the district in 1:47.34.
The Bulldogs’ 400 and 1,600 relay teams also qualified for the regional.
The 400 team is made up of sophomores Shelby Redway and Julie Hotz, Lindley and Morris. The 1,600 team
consists of junior Erica Stolar, sophomore Jessie Pietrasz, Hotz and Morris.
Morris qualified for the regional in the high jump, while Lindley advanced on the 100 and Pietrasz made
it in the 800.
"We want to get as many of our kids to state as we can," Rossford coach Todd Eckel said.
Competing in two individual events at the regional are senior Kylee Bernthisel (1,600, 3,200) of Otsego;
seniors Jena Jacoby (shot put, discus) and Rachel McNay (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) of Eastwood; and
senior Kori Reiser (shot, discus) and freshman Liz Garner (100, 200) of Elmwood.
Eastwood’s other regional qualifier is sophomore Elise Wolff in the pole vault.
Otsego’s other regional qualifiers are junior Sidney Rowe in the high jump; and the 3,200 relay team of
sophomore Dayna Fackler, freshmen Mallory Beach and Allison Horen, and Bernthisel.
