Bowling Green State University and the Huntington Center in downtown Toledo have been selected to host an
NCAA hockey regional in 2013.
The official announcement was made Wednesday morning by BGSU and the NCAA.
Game times and dates for the four regionals haven’t been finalized, but will be played during the weekend
of March 29-31.
Two of the regionals are played on Friday and Saturday, and two are played on Saturday and Sunday.
“We are thrilled that the NCAA has chosen us to host a 2013 NCAA Hockey Regional,” BG athletics director
Greg Christopher said in a statement. “This is a great opportunity to showcase Bowling Green State
University, our hockey program, and all of Northwest Ohio during the event.”
All four regional sites for 2013 were announced Wednesday.
The West regional will be held at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. and be hosted by the University
of Michigan.
The East regional will be held at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. and hosted by Brown
University. The arena was formerly known as the Providence Civic Center.
The Northeast Regional will be held at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H. and hosted by the
University of New Hampshire.
The regional champions advance to the NCAA Frozen Four April 11 and 13 at The Consol Energy Center, home
of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.
“The committee has placed an emphasis in the regional rounds on neutral-site buildings with NHL-size ice
surfaces,” said Sean Frazier, the chairman of the NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey committee and a
deputy athletics director at the University of Wisconsin.
The Huntington Center, which is the home of the East Coast Hockey League’s Toledo Walleye, has a capacity
of about 7,400 for hockey.
“All of these facilities meet those standards, and we feel the arenas and hosts will be able to provide a
tremendous championship opportunity for the student-athletes,” Frazier said.
The regionals use a single-elimination format, with the semifinals the first day and the championship
game the second day.
