FDA: Don’t give SimplyThick to premature babies
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Food and Drug Administration is warning parents and health care providers to stop
using the SimplyThick additive in the breast milk and formula of premature babies after the deaths of
two infants who were given it.
The FDA said the product, a thickening agent that helps infants with swallowing, may cause a potentially
life-threatening intestinal disorder.
The agency said it is investigating 15 cases of necrotizing enterocolitis from at least four medical
centers around the country. SimplyThick is most commonly given to premature babies who still are in the
hospital.
But the FDA said some of the ill babies already had been sent home on a feeding plan that included
SimplyThick.
Symptoms may include a bloated abdominal area, feeding intolerance, greenish-tinged vomiting and bloody
stools.
Saudi authorities re-arrest woman for driving
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) – A Saudi security official says authorities have re-arrested an activist who
defied a ban on female drivers in the conservative kingdom.
Manal al-Sherif is being accused of "violating public order" and will be held for five days
while the case is investigated.
She launched a campaign against the longtime ban last week by posting a video on the Internet of herself
behind the wheel in the city of Khobar.
Al-Sherif was detained for several hours on Saturday by the country’s religious police.
A security official says al-Sherif was re-arrested Sunday. The official spoke anonymously because he
wasn’t authorized to speak to the press.
About 300 Saudi activists have signed a petition appealing to the Saudi king to set al-Sherif free.
