Woman’s Club of BG racks up awards at 112th statewide convention

The Woman’s Club of Bowling Green has been recognized at the state level for its work in volunteer
service and community projects. The club was ranked tenth in the state among Ohio’s women’s clubs, based
on overall achievement in reporting for the year 2010. This is the seventh year of the last eight years
that the club has been in the top 10 clubs in the state. The award was announced at the 112th Annual
Convention of the GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs April 15-17.
Club awards were received in the following categories:
¥ Home Life, for a March of Dimes project.
¥ The Buckeye Magazine, for submitting articles and photos.
¥ Fund raising, for the Home Tour and brunches.
¥ 2008-2010 Ohio President’s Special Project, home tour.
¥ 2010-2012 Ohio President’s Special Project, books.
Individual awards were:
¥ Vicki Harris, Bookmark Contest, first places for serious and humorous, third humorous.
¥ Faye Marks, first place, GFWC/Ohio Clubwoman Essay, " Leading the Way."
¥ Joan Gordon, certificate of recognition, Clubwoman Essay Contest.
Norma Stickler, 2011-2013 president of the BG club, and Linda Hamilton, BG member of the OFWC resolutions
committee, were recognized by the Pioneer Workers, a past leaders group, through the recording of their
names in the Blue Book. This recognition was established in 1964 to honor clubwomen who have made
significant contributions to their clubs, communities, and state. The BG women were nominated by Gordon,
who also is listed in the book.
Evelyn Bachman, president of the Ohio Federation, presided at the convention. Marilyn Pahl was the
parliamentary adviser, and Donna Schmidt served as the convention pianist. Carla Blinn, Northwest
District president, gave the invitation to the 114th convention next year, which will be coordinated by
the NW District members. Also attending the convention from Bowling Green were Camille Harris OFWC fund
raising chairman, and Lynette Rosebrook, BG club secretary.
At the closing program, Gordon, 2002-2004 Ohio president, presented her Rainbow Award for membership
campaigns completed in 2010.
Kathy Mull, Victims Services Program coordinator for Behavioral Connections in Wood County, was the
keynote speaker at the opening session.
In addition to the business sessions, convention attendees participated in workshops on protocol, club
work, creating a wining photograph, clubwomen on the web, and a hands-on session preparing books for
delivery to children’s organizations around the state.
The Bowling Green Woman’s Club was organized in 1920. Current projects include collection of dimes for
the March of Dimes, support of the Cocoon Shelter, a creative writing contest for elementary and high
school students (now in its 28th year), scholarship for a Bowling Green High School student, scholarship
for a music major at Bowling Green State University, conservation projects, collection of food for the
food pantry, support of the Wood County Public Library, and literacy.
