AW hands Perrysburg baseball first NLL loss (5-19-11)

PERRYSBURG — Perrysburg’s baseball team is still in command of the Northern Lakes League race.
But the fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets saw their margin for error reduced Thursday with a 4-1 loss to
Anthony Wayne.
Perrysburg, seeking its first NLL championship since 2003, had a chance to clinch no worse than a tie for
the title with a win over AW.
Instead, the Yellow Jackets didn’t play well, losing for the first time in league play and just the third
time this season.
Perrysburg, 18-3 overall, is 10-1 in the NLL with three games remaining.
Maumee and Northview each have three losses in the league, but they play Monday at Northview.
The Yellow Jackets still have games against Springfield at home Monday, at Bowling Green Tuesday and a
yet to be scheduled game at Northview.
Perrysburg was slated to play Northview Friday, but that game was postponed because the Yellow Jackets
are playing Ashland in a Division I district semifinal at Carter Park.
AW, in avenging a 15-0 loss to Perrysburg April 29, is 17-6, 7-4. The Generals also will play in a
district semifinal at Carter Park Friday night, facing eighth-ranked Sandusky.
Perrysburg and AW decided to play Thursday after their district games were rained out earlier in the day.
The game originally was scheduled for AW, but was moved to Perrysburg because the Generals’ field was
unplayable. AW was the home team.
The Generals turned in a quality performance, led by the seven-hit pitching of Nick Reiter. AW also had
timely hitting to make the most of its five hits and excellent defense.
“They played well and it wasn’t a good day for us,” Perrysburg coach Dave Hall said.
Perrysburg hadn’t lost since it was swept by second-ranked Vandalia Butler April 30.
“This shows we’re vulnerable and we have to play well to be successful,” said Perrysburg senior Zach
Kolvey, who singled and doubled in three at-bats to raise his team-leading batting average to .481. “We
have to be ready to play.”
Reiter, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound left-hander, mixed his fastball and curveball. He struck out seven and
walked two, and hit a batter.
But the Yellow Jackets still had scoring chances.
They had runners at second and third after A.J. Stockwell’s single and Alec Schmenk’s double with out in
the third and AW leading 1-0, but two ground balls to third ended the inning.
Perrysburg cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth, scoring when it hit into a double play with the bases
loaded after Kolvey, Steve Slocum and Hunter Smith all singled to start the inning.
Ryan Young walked to open the Perrysburg seventh and Kevin Schenk was hit by a pitch, but Reiter ended
the game on a strikeout, a popup to second and a ground ball to third.
The Yellow Jackets started the game with a single, but that runner was immediately picked off. They
failed to execute the sacrifice bunt three times.
“Reiter pitched a nice game,” Hall said. “We had some chances early, but we had a bad approach at the
plate with the exception of Kolvey. Our approach with runners in scoring position is to swing at pitches
from the waist up, but we were swinging at balls down low and hitting ground balls.”
AW scratched out single runs in the second and third for a 2-0 lead, and added two runs in the fourth for
a 4-1 advantage.
The Generals had only four singles and a triple, but scored with the aid of two sacrifice bunts and one
sacrifice fly.
Three of the four Generals’ four stolen bases figured in the scoring as did three of Perrysburg’s four
errors.
“They got timely hits and found ways to score,” Hall said.
Perrysburg’s Pete Munger pitched well, allowing the one earned run. He struck out five and walked none,
utilizing a curveball and split-finger fastball.
“He hit his spots and threw strikes,” Kolvey said. “We didn’t help him defensively.”
Both teams were happy to be playing as Perrysburg had been off since last Friday and AW hadn’t played
since Monday. Neither team used any of its best pitchers to make sure they’re all ready for the district
tournament.
Reiter was only the third left-handed starter Perrysburg has faced this season. The Yellow Jackets
started five left-hand hitters against AW and Ashland is expected to start a lefty today
“It was good to get a game in and see some live pitching,” Kolvey said. “We couldn’t get it going, just a
bad day overall.”
