Census: Divorces decline but 7-year itch persists
WASHINGTON (AP) – New census figures show the "seven-year" itch persists – couples who break up
typically separate upon seven years of marriage, and divorce a year later.
The 2009 data released Wednesday also show U.S. divorces are leveling off after decades of increases. The
census found that among all race groups, women who were ever married and then divorced reached as high
as 41 percent among 50- to 59-year-olds. That’s down from 44 percent in 2004.
The exception was black women ages 50 to 59. Their divorce rate edged up to 48 percent.
Rose Kreider, a census demographer, says recent increases in couples cohabitating as well as rising
median ages before marriage are contributing to overall declines in divorce as people wait longer before
making long-term commitments.
FDA panel backs infant doses for kids’ Tylenol
SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) – Federal health experts say dosing instructions for children younger than 2
years old should be added to Children’s Tylenol and similar products containing acetaminophen, the
popular pain reliever and fever reducer.
A panel of FDA advisers voted 21-0 in favor of adding doses for babies and toddlers to over-the-counter
acetaminophen formulas. The FDA is meeting to consider changes that will make the formulas safer and
easier to use. Products under discussion include Johnson & Johnson’s Children and Infants’
Tylenol, Novartis’ Triaminic and other brands.
These liquid formulas have never contained dosing information for children under 2 to avoid an overdose
and to encourage parents to seek medical attention for sick infants.
Fever in children younger than six months can be associated with dangerous infections, like meningitis
and pneumonia.
The FDA’s panelists said the lack of information contributes to confusion and can lead parents to
incorrectly dose children. Acetaminophen-related overdoses are most common among children younger than
2, and have increased this past decade.
Warrant issued for man in school shooting
HOUSTON (AP) – A warrant has been issued for a man accused of allowing a 6-year-old boy access to a gun
that the child accidentally fired inside an elementary school cafeteria in Houston.
The boy and two other children suffered minor injuries in the April 19 incident.
Police spokesman Kese Smith said Tuesday that Wrolandrea Hensley, who knows the boy’s mother, is being
sought on a misdemeanor charge of making a handgun accessible to a child.
