GENOA — Eastwood’s girls track and field team picked the perfect time to have its best performance of the
season.
The Eagles won their 11th straight Suburban Lakes League championship in impressive fashion Saturday.
They won seven events and finished with 175 points, well ahead of runnerup Woodmore with 132.
Lake also performed well and was third with 132 points. PHOTO GALLERY

Otsego junior Kylee Bernthisel, who won the 1,600 and 3,200, was named the league’s performer of the
year.
Eastwood won six running events, with junior Rachal McNay repeating as the champion in both the 100 and
300 hurdles.
The Eagles also had three second-place finishes, three third-place finishes and five fourth-place
finishes.
“We came together as a team and we competed in every event with as much as effort as we had,” McNay said.
“Our goal was to keep that streak of league titles going. We didn’t want to be the team not to win it.”

Kylee Bernthisel of
Otsego wins the 1600.

The Eagles had two of the top eight placers in 12 of the 13 non-relay events, including two of the top
six placers nine times. Each individual event scored eight places.
Eastwood’s point total was 18 more than last season and 22 more than 2009.
“We performed very well today,” said Eastwood coach Nikki Sabo, who is in her second season. “We had a
lot of PRs (personal records) and season-bests today. I couldn’t ask for anything more from them.
“They gave great effort. That’s all you can ask. I’m very, very proud. Everyone did very, very well. It’s
good momentum going into districts next week.”
McNay had her best times of the season in her races, winning the 100s in 16.8 and the 300s in 47.55. Her
previous bests were 16.9 in the 100s and 47.7 in the 300s.
In addition to her back-to-back league titles in both hurdle races, McNay was second in the 300s and
fourth in the 100s as a freshman in 2009.
“Today was great,” McNay said. “I thought I had a good chance to win the 300s and maybe win the 100s
because there are a lot of great competitors in the 100s.”
McNay also ran on Eastwood’s winning 1,600 relay team which had a time of 4:13.80. Joining McNay on the
relay were freshman Maddie Jackson, senior Audrey Flores and sophomore Aricka LaVoy.
“I’m happy to come out with two individual victories, and a win in the 400 with my girls,” McNay said.

Eastwood won three other individual events — LaVoy was first in the long jump at 15-5 1/4, junior Ericca
Hollister was first in the 100 in 13.48 and Jackson was first in the 400 in 62.32.
The Eagles’ 400 relay team of Hollister, LaVoy, Flores and junior Courtney Rolf won in 51.47.
We took everything as a challenge,” McNay said. “It’s definitely a lot more fun and satisfying to win
when you perform well because you’re really excited about the way the day went. We had a good day
individually and as a team.”
Bernthisel won the 1,600 in 5:27.96 and the 3,200 in 12:03.45. She also was third in the pole vault and
second in the 3,200 relay.
“I was really happy with (the 1,600 and the 3,200), winning both of them was my goal,” Bernthisel said.
“I ran well in both and that makes me even happier.”
Lake won the 800 relay where freshman Nicole Pennington, sophomore Ashley Timmons, senior Jessica Abbey
and sophomore Rebecca Boos had a time of 1:49.15.

The Flyers also had five second-place finishers.
“Obviously, second would have been nice, but it’s still a good day,” said Lake coach Dominick Kaple, who
is in his second season. “We’re getting there. It’s been a good couple years. We competed well. This
great for our program, another step in the right direction.”
Elmwood senior Reagan Briggs and Otsego sophomore Sidney Rowe both won their specialties for the second
straight season.
Briggs cleared 9-6 to win the pole vault and Rowe cleared 5-2 to win the high jump.
Also for Elmwood, junior Kori Reiser won the shot put with a distance of 36-4.
