GENOA — Eastwood, Elmwood and Lake were all smiles following the Suburban Lakes League boys track and
field meet Saturday.
Eastwood won its 11th straight league championship, and Elmwood and Lake had excellent performances.
The Eagles won 10 events — including league-record runs in the 400 and 1,600 relays — en route to 194
total points.

Just last season, Lake finished next-to-last and Elmwood was last in the seven-team league.
The Eagles’ 10 victories were complemented by 10 other finishes in the top four, including five seconds
and three thirds. The top eight finishers in each event score.
“I’m very pleased with today and it sets us up very nicely for the post-season,” said Eastwood coach Gary
White, whose team is the two-time defending state champion in Division II.
The Eagles’ 400 relay team of sophomore Isaiah Conkle, junior Kyle Dierker and seniors Nate Wagner and
Taylor Depew won in 43.48, breaking the mark of 43.6 set by Eastwood in 2003.
Eastwood’s 1,600 team of juniors Zach Conkle and Kyle Schlumbohm, Depew and senior Nick Twining won in
3:26.09, breaking Genoa’s record of 3:26.3 set in 2004.

Lake’s Nathan Adkins
wins the 1600 Meter Run.

The Eagles loaded up their 1,600 team this week, inserting Zach Conkle into the race.
“Both races felt great, like we were breaking the record,” said DePew, who also was second in the 200.
“Coach White has really been on us about getting the 1,600 (relay) record for the last couple of years
and we’ve been talking about the 400 relay record this week. We really wanted to get the 1,600 record
because it means so much to him.”
Eastwood also won the 3,200 relay where seniors Troy Wahl, Aaron Brinker, Darin Goodman and Twining had a
time of 8:32.37.
The Eagles believe their four relays all could qualify for state. The 800 team was third.
“We have a couple of more weeks to bring those times down,” Depew said.
Twining was the SLL’s performer of the year. He won the 800 for the second straight season, posting a
time of 1:57.17.
The Eagles won four other running events — sophomore Blake Kohring won the 110 hurdles in 15.67, Wagner
won the 100 in 11.48, junior Zach Conkle won the 400 in 52.79 and Dierker won the 200 in 23.24.
Eastwood won two field events — sophomore Derek Snowden went 19-4 1/4 to win the long jump and Schlumbohm
cleared 13-6 to win the pole vault. Schlumbohm also won his event last season.
“Our goal was to win the league again and keep the legacy going,” Depew said. “It’s a lot more satisfying
to win the league when you perform well. You always want to have a lot of PRs (personal records).”
Although Eastwood doesn’t have individual standouts like Justin Welch and Cody Seifert this season, they
do have a deeper team. It scored 21 more points in the league meet this season than last season.
The team’s increased depth was best evidenced in the sprints where it finished first and second in the
100, 200 and 400 with six different runners.
“Just overall, top to bottom, we’re deeper,” said White, who is in his 23rd season.
“We work hard every day in practice and we have people in practice who push us to get better,” Depew
said. “They’re not in this meet, but they’re running in (junior varsity) meets and dual meets. They’re
pushing us to improve. They’ll fill our spots next year, just like we did when we were watching as
freshmen and sophomores.”
Elmwood’s point total was 56 1/2 more than last season.
Royal junior Kyle Smithey won the high jump at 6-1 and the 300 hurdles in 40.57. He also was second in
the 110 hurdles and the 1,600 relay.

Eastwood’s Blake Kohring
wins the 110 Meter hurdles.

“Second place is what we’ve been working for all year,” said Elmwood coach Eric Poffenbaugh, who is in
his third season. “As much time as these guys put in during the offseason, I couldn’t be any more
prouder of my guys.
“This is unbelievable. They deserve all of the credit. They did an excellent job. I had a hunch we could
do it, but seeing it all come together is just overwhelming. It’s awesome.”
Elmwood had only two seniors last season and has only three this season.
“Attitude is the big difference over last year,” he said. “They’ve worked hard and kept a great attitude.
They had some success early in the season and kept believing in themselves.”
Lake’s 101 points were up from 76 last season and 49 in 2009.
Flyer junior Nathan Adkins won the 1,600 in 4:39.21 and the 3,200 in 10:42.92.
“Obviously, second would have been nice, but it’s still a good day,” said Lake coach Dominick Kaple, who
is in his second season. “We’re getting there. It’s been a good couple years. We competed well. This
great for our program, another step in the right direction.”
