The Ohio State University has issued the list of seniors and graduate students who received degrees at
the winter quarter commencement exercises in March. Wood County residents on the list include: Stacie
Wenig, Bowling Green, master of science; Walter Borowicz, Cygnet, bachelor of science in human ecology,
magna cum laude; Andrew Wilhelm, Custar, bachelor of science in agriculture, cum laude; Hike Aleksanyan,
Brock Freeman and Duncan Long, all of Perrysburg, all with a bachelor of science; Nicholas Ghia,
Perrysburg, bachelor of science in education; Weston Klinksiek, Perrysburg, associate of arts; Sara
Smith, Perrysburg, bachelor of science in human ecology; and Michael Brown, Weston, bachelor of science
in agriculture.
Joseph Funke, originally from Perrysburg and a 2010 graduate of the Olin College of Engineering in
Needham, Mass., received a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships for 2011. NSF
fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $30,000 along with a $10,500 cost of education
allowance for tuition and fees, opportunities for international research and professional development,
and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education
they choose. Funke plans to use the fellowship to attend Stanford University.
Sara E. Stefanich graduated May 7 summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish from Miami
University in Oxford. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, and
the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish honor society where she served as vice president. She received the Employee
Services Leadership Award and the Senior Services Leadership Award her senior year. She studied abroad
her junior year in Madrid, Spain. She will be working for the Ministry of Education in Spain through a
program to teach English in a Spanish school for the next school year. Following that she will be
attending graduate school. She is a Bowling Green High School graduate.
Mercedes McGee, Rossford, is a member of the cheerleading squad at Ashland University for the 2011-12
academic years. She’s a 2010 graduate of Rossford High School.
Rachel E. Wood, Perrysburg, received the Oscar W. and Viola H. Dunn Bible Prize at the University of
Mount Union’s annual senior recognition and honors convocation. She is a senior music major and has the
highest rank in the field of Bible study this year.
Amber L. Reynolds, of Wayne, has earned dean’s list honors from Otterbein University on the basis of
excellent academic performance for winter quarter. She has a 3.9 grade point average while majoring in
early childhood education with a specialty in special needs. She graduated from Elmwood High School in
2009.
Nathan Mugge, Perrysburg, made the fall dean’s list at Concordia University Wisconsin. Honorees had to
have a minimum 3.50 gpa.
Emily Evans, Bowling Green, was named to the dean’s list for fall term at Beloit (Wis.) College after
maintaining at leasta 3.40 cumulative grade point average.
Heidelberg University’s fall dean’s list included a number of students from Wood County: Michael
Schroeder, Bowling Green; Jeffrey Snow, Haskins; Jennifer Simko, Millbury; Lori Schwab, Northwood;
Melissa Orzechowski, Perrysburg; and Cierra Holman, Risingsun.
John Schmidt, of Bowling Green; and David Banks, Brandi Jackson, Maria Mauricio, Tracy Nye, Pamela
Wiechman and Tabatha Yeary, all of Fostoria, have been inducted into the Alpha Mu Epsilon chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa, a national two-year college honor society. They all attend Terra Community College in
Fremont.
Jeremy Baker and Lily Schmidt, both of Bowling Green, along with Aaron Swartz, Perrysburg, made the
Wittenberg University dean’s list for fall semester after maintaining a 3.5 or better grade point
average.
Spring Arbor (Mich.) University has listed the Wood County students who earned degrees at fall
commencement. That list includes Karen Fischer, Perrysburg, and Rebecca Johnson, Bowling Green, both in
management and organizational development; Angelic Mercer, Bloomdale, social work, magna cum laude;
James Scheff, Perrysburg, master of arts in organizational management; Cindy Miller, of Luckey, master
of arts in organizational management; and Roxanne Burgess, Perrysburg, also a master of arts in family
studies.
