William E. Lockwood

William E. Lockwood, 91, of Millbury, OH, died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on April
14, 2011, at the Genoa Care Center due to complications suffered from a stroke in December 2010. He had
been living at Genoa Retirement Village for several years.
He was a retired Cyto-technologist and former Weather Observer with the U.S. Weather Bureau. He was later
employed at Molnar Packing Company.
He served as Chief Aerographer’s Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve during World War II.
He was born March 23, 1920 to Arthur C. and Irma (Dennis) Lockwood in Grand Haven, MI. His father also
was employed by the U.S. Weather Bureau, serving in Madison, WI, Sandusky, OH and Columbus, OH.
William graduated from Sandusky High School in 1937 and attended Ohio State University until 1940 when he
decided to be a weatherman. He completed his degree at the University of Toledo and took courses at
Owens Technical College. He was a member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon and Tau Alpha Pi. He was an associate
member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and American Society of Cytology. Bill also was
a member of the Lake Township Zoning Appeals and served as chairman for many years.
He was an avid fan of Lake High School athletic programs and enjoyed watching his sons, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren play all sports. Bill also loved playing golf, reading books and listening to
classical music. After his wife passed, he attended lunches at the Wood County Senior Center in
Walbridge, OH. He loved all the friendships he made there and also at the Genoa Retirement Village.
He married Thresa Molnar April 20, 1941. She preceded him on April 22, 2000, after being married for 59
years. They had three sons: William (Barbara), Lake Placid, FL, John (Donna), Millbury, OH and Mark,
Newark, OH; five grandchildren: Sheri (Tim) Materni, Troy Lockwood, Nicole Drumm, Ben Lockwood and
Alexander (Kara) Lockwood; and five great-grandchildren: Jacob, Emma and Jessica Materni, Ryan and
Madison Drumm.
Two brothers also survive him: Robert (June), Virginia Beach, VA and Roy (Joy), Jacksonville, FL. A third
brother, Arthur, of Columbus, OH, preceded him in March 1998.
Bill’s wishes were to have his body donated to the MCO Department of Neuroscience, Toledo, OH. Therefore,
there will be no viewing. After his cremation, there will be a memorial gathering of family at the
burial site at Lake Township Cemetery.
