Bowling Green’s baseball team ran out of clutch hits Sunday.
The Falcons left 13 runners on base — nine in scoring position — in a 7-4 loss to arch-rival Toledo at
Steller Field.
They had at least one runner on base in every inning, and stranded two runners five different times.
BG hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the first, allowing Toledo to retain
its 1-0 lead.
The Rockets increased their lead to 5-0 in the third and held BG off after that.
Toledo played well to win the finale of the three-game series. The Falcons were in position to sweep the
series after a 13-10 win Saturday and a 6-2 victory over Friday.
“We didn’t hit like we needed to. The bottom line is we didn’t hit with runners in scoring position,”
said BG coach Danny Schmitz, whose team had 29 hits during the first two games of the series.
The Falcons won a conference series for the third time this season, although they failed to earn their
first sweep. BG is 13-19 overall and tied with Miami for second place in the MAC East Division at 7-5.

Toledo, which had an 11-game winning streak snapped Friday, is 19-17, 8-4 MAC West.
“You’re always happy to win the series, but we have to learn that when you get an opportunity to grab
another win, you have to do that,” Schmitz said. “You have to come hungry and you have to be ready to
go. The first five or six innings, we didn’t do anything. We really need to come out inning one and get
after it.”
BG also was hurt by five strikeouts on a day where the winds were estimated at 30-40 miles per hour and
blowing towards the outfield.
“You’ve got to put the ball in play, especially on a windy day like today,” Schmitz said. “Anything can
happen when you put the ball in play. If you don’t, it’s a real easy job for the defense.”
Toledo scored its first run on an RBI single to left field by Elmwood High School graduate Ben Hammer and
made it 2-0 in the third on Chris Dudics’ one-out home run to right,
Tyler Grogg then reached when BG’s center fielder dropped a fly ball. After Hammer hit was hit by a
pitch, the Rockets stroked three straight singles for a 5-0 lead and knocked BG starting pitcher Charles
Wooten out of the game.
But reliever Ross Gerdeman came on to record the final two outs of the inning and held Toledo scoreless
until the eighth when it scored twice for a 7-3 lead. The runs came after BG scored three times in the
last of the seventh to close within 5-3.
Gerdeman, a junior right-hander, allowed no runs on four hits over his first 4 2/3 innings. He pitched a
total of 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
“He attacked the (strike) zone and got all three pitches over, that’s the key for him,” Schmitz said. “He
did a real good job of that. He did a very nice job. He did exactly what he was supposed to do.
“He held the fort and gave the offense a chance to get us back in the game. We had opportunities, but we
didn’t take advantage of them.”
Freshman right-hander Ben Singer pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for BG, allowing no runs on two hits
with one strikeout.
Berti and Andrew Kubuski each had three hits to lead BG’s 12-hit attack.
Berti was 8-for-13 in the series, followed by Kubuski was 6-for-13, Ryan Schlater 5-for-11, and Frank
Berry 6-for-14.
Hammer was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and finished the series 5-for-11 with two runs scored and
three RBI.
On Saturday, BG took a 9-1 lead during the first three innings and stroked 14 hits.
Schlater and Berti each had three hits, while Clay Duncan and Berry each had two.
Berry hit a three-run home run and finished with three runs scored, while Berti also had three RBI, and
Schlater scored four times.
Hammer was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
