DEFIANCE – Andrew Z is now facing tax charges in the city after being arrested on a warrant Wednesday
afternoon.
According to Perrysburg Police, at 12:14 p.m. Andrew Zepeda, a former Toledo radio personality and owner
of the now-closed Andrew Z’s Sportz Pizzeria at Levis Commons, was arrested in the 6100 block of
Brookhaven Boulevard on a warrant from Defiance Municipal Court. He was transported to the Wood County
Justice Center where he was held at the request of Defiance County.
According to Defiance Municipal Court Clerk Julie Fitzenrider, Defiance City Tax Commissioner Mary Boals
filed charges against Zepeda March 14 for failure to permit tax commissioners to examine books, records
and papers to determine payroll, and failure to withhold or pay tax from employees. Both are criminal
charges.
Zepeda reportedly failed to appear for an arraignment on the charges, scheduled for April 8, and the
warrant for his arrest was issued. Fitzenrider said that Zepeda posted bond and was given a court date
to appear this morning at 10.
Boals said that Zepeda did have a restaurant in the city, which she said was open for two months before
closing. The business, called Andrew Z’s Mex-Italiana, was located in the 1400 block of Baltimore
Street.
Boals said she was not able to say how much money is owed in the incident.
Zepeda pleaded guilty in February to charges of theft, failure to remit sales tax and complicity to
breaking and entering in Wood County Common Pleas Court, but was granted an intervention in lieu of
conviction.
