Two students who live in Bowling Green have been nominated to represent Ohio at separate youth programs
in Virginia.
Joyce Chao, of Bowling Green and a junior at Maumee Valley Country Day School, has been nominated to
represent Ohio as a national youth correspondent to the 2011 Washington Journalism and Media Conference
at George Mason University.
Jon Cheney, of Bowling Green and a junior at Bowling Green High, has been selected to represent Ohio as a
youth delegate to the 2011 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment, also at George Mason University
in Fairfax, Va.
Chao has the opportunity to join a select group of students from all over the country for an intensive
study of journalism and media. She was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated
interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.
The Washington Journalism and Media Conference will be held July 10-15.
National youth correspondents will participate in hands-on, experiential learning through decision-making
simulations that challenge them to solve problems and explore the creative, practical, and ethical
tensions inherent in journalism and media. The experiential portion of the program is complemented by
speakers who are well-known leaders in the field.
Cheney has the opportunity to join a select group of only 250 students from all over the country honored
with the chance to take part in an intensive study of leadership in environmental science and
conservation. He was chosen based on his academics and an interest in leadership in the sciences and
conservation studies.
George Mason University along with partners, the National Geographic Society and the National Zoo, will
host these youth scholars from June 26 to July 1.
