Employees, customers, elected officials and guests were welcomed to the Northwestern Water and Sewer
District’s annual customer information meeting at the district office at 12560 Middleton Pike by board
president Lyle Schulte.
The agenda covered several items including:
¥ The role of utilities for economic development in the county. Rex Huffman, president of the Wood County
Economic Development Commission and general counsel of the Wood County Port Authority, cited examples of
development such as CSX intermodal, First Solar expansion, Crossroads and Access Pointe where utilities
helped draw the development.
¥ Financial status of the district.
¥ "Smart" water meters were discussed as they are being used to provide monthly billing data,
but also hourly usage information (one day later) for consumers and businesses. For example, possible
water leaks and unusual patterns of usage are detected and identified for possible problems. Field
maintenance and other purposes were discussed as well.
After a question and answer period, a tour of the building and several water and sewer exhibits were open
to the public.
The district represents 20 townships (including Scott Township in Sandusky County) and 10 villages
throughout Wood County. It owns and operate approximately 10 treatment plants of various types and
sizes.
Approximately 17,000 customers are served by the district.
