Carle’s Corner – Falcon men headed in right direction

CLEVELAND – It’s important that head coach Louis Orr and his staff get Bowling Green headed into the
right direction, especially with the move to the new Stroh Center taking place next season.
BG has had two straight losing seasons, but in my mind the pieces appear to be in place for success.
Bowling Green needs to develop consistency, maturity and find a go-to player, a guy that can carry a team
for minutes at a time and make everyone around him better. With the returning experience and the
projected development, the Falcons have a chance to be a pretty good basketball team next season.
Only two seniors are gone from this year’s team that went 14-19 overall.
The Falcons return the top nine scorers and the top eight rebounders from the team which ended its season
with a 67-56 loss to Western Michigan in the Mid-American Conference tournament quarterfinals Thursday.

It starts with Scott Thomas and Dee Brown, who both return for their senior seasons.
Thomas is a very versatile player who can do things at both ends of the court. Thomas is a solid
rebounder and playmaker. The best thing to do with Thomas is just let him play and not put the pressure
on him to be the No. 1 option on offense.
Brown came on at the end of the season and Orr praised him for his leadership in the latter part of the
year. Brown can also score, but again he is best when he’s not the No. 1 option.
That top option should be A’uston Calhoun, who had a breakout season after the first 10 games of the
season. Calhoun, who will be a redshirt junior, scored in double figures in 13 of 18 games against MAC
opponents. He is a big, physical presence inside and can go to the basket, hit the short jumper and also
go outside for the occasional three.
The BG coaching staff has done a great job helping Calhoun’s development, as he battled academic problems
at the beginning of his Falcon career. He went from playing six minutes a year ago to BG’s biggest
offensive threat.
Jordon Crawford, who gives the team energy and ball-handling from the point-guard spot, also showed a lot
of growth this season. Even at 5-feet-6 he proved to be a handful for more than one team with his
quickness.
With the experience gained this season, Crawford gives the Falcons four solid players for the future.
Danny McElroy, Craig Sealey and Cameron Black should be given plenty of opportunities to develop into
players who can be major parts of the rotation. All three have shown positive signs this season and all
three have an up-side.
I’m not sure what the future holds for Torian Oglesby, Luke Kraus and James Erger. To me all three seem
over-whelmed whenever they get into a game.
The wild cards are Anthony Henderson, the 2010 Toledo City League player of the year, who was redshirted
this season and incoming freshmen Jehvon Clarke, 6-1, and Desmond Rorie, 6-9. Clarke and Rorie are both
from Canton Timken.
Henderson could definitely be a difference-maker if he can consistently hit from the outside. The Falcons
were definitely lacking a 3-point threat this season.
Clarke can work with Crawford at the point and you never have enough big guys so Rorie will also get a
chance.
I know the 2-3 zone has been a staple for Orr and it has helped the Falcons earn some victories.
However, I would like to see some man-to-man mixed in also, just as a change of pace. Also, remembering
the days when Jim Larranaga was at Bowling Green, I’d like to see the coaches be more aggressive in
using a half-court trap. Larranaga’s teams made good use of the scramble defense and in George Mason
games you can hear Larranaga’s whistle and see the trap.
I know you are never sure of anything in sports.
However, I like the potential for the Falcons and even with the disappointments from the season, I feel
pretty good about the future.
