Bowling Green’s starting job in goal is up for grabs.
Falcon coach Chris Bergeron said Tuesday no decision has been made on a starting goalie for this
weekend’s series at 16th-ranked Western Michigan.
Until this week, BG had started senior Nick Eno in the first game of every series and sophomore Andrew
Hammond in the second game of every series.
Both have played well overall, although soft goals have plagued both at times.
"Our goalies have been told the Friday-Saturday night thing is not going to continue," Bergeron
said. "It is going to be based on who is playing better and who we feel, as a coaching staff, gives
us the best chance to win. Winning’s in the criteria and overall performance during that game,
obviously, is in the criteria."
Hammond has a 2.85 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage in 16 games, while Eno has a 3.06
goals-against and .887 save percentage in 14 games.
Hammond currently has the hotter hand, stopping 38-of-40 shots last weekend against Lake Superior. Eno
started the series opener, but was pulled after allowing three goals in 14 shots, playing 26:18.
BG has eight regular-season games and at least one Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series
remaining.
"Just like we do with centers and defensemen, a little bit of competition is healthy," Bergeron
said. "It’s a good time to fight for that number one job and if somebody separates himself to where
he plays the next 10 games, that’s the way it’ll be."
VISELLI: Freshman forward Ryan Viselli played well against Lake Superior, totaling three assists and an
on-ice rating of plus-2.
"He’s improving and getting a little bit of confidence with the puck," Bergeron said.
"He’s realizing this lifestyle we talk about can pay off and show dividends, not just in hockey,
student-wise, just the way you feel about yourself on a daily basis."
The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder had 65 goals and 95 in four seasons of junior hockey. He has seven assists in
21 games this season.
"He keeps coming at you, and his instincts and hockey IQ are pretty good," Bergeron said.
INJURIES: BG defenseman Jake Sloat is questionable for the weekend with a lingering quad contusion, which
sidelined him last weekend. Defenseman Ryan Peltoma (cut finger) also is questionable.
