LUCKEY — A fast start, great 3-point shooting, and a solid defensive effort by Lake spelled disaster for
Eastwood Monday night.
The Flyers’ Kaysie Brittenham set the school scoring record and Lake cruised to a 62-27 Suburban Lakes
League victory.
The Flyers used the first 7:23 of the game and jumped out to a 20-0 lead, burying the Eagles’ hopes for
an upset, cruising to their 58th consecutive regular season win.
Lake remained atop the SLL standings with a league record of 8-0 and an overall record of 15-0.
The loss marked the ninth consecutive SLL loss this season for Eastwood which fell to 1-15, 0-9.
“Our goal was to come and play a complete game,” said Lake head coach Denny Meyer, whose team is ranked
fourth in the state. “We just said ‘we have to get better starts,’ and I thought we did.”
Lake looked exceptional in all facets of the game, especially its 3-point shooting.
The Flyers shot 9-of-20 (45 percent) from three-point land and 23-of-52 (44 percent) overall.
Hannah Cox accounted for six of the team’s 3-pointers, en route to scoring 20 points for the Flyers.
Cox looked to be in focus all night as she fired up 3-point shot after 3-point shot, making it look easy
to everyone in attendance.
“Those one’s that she hit the other night (at Otsego) … maybe gave her confidence because those shots
looked dead on (tonight). She was ready to catch and shoot so we need that for her.”
Lake’s star, Brittenham, accounted for the other three treys by the Flyers.
But on this night, a two-point shot was more important for Brittenham.
At the 6:36 mark of the fourth quarter, she cut to the right side of the basket, received a pass from
Hunter Johnson, and knocked down a 10-footer with ease, surpassing Kris Livingston to become the Lake
girls basketball team’s all-time leading scorer with 1,200 points.
“It’s definitely a huge accomplishment and I’m definitely proud of it,” said Brittenham. “Hopefully
people will look up to that.”
Brittenham, who says she will play basketball at NCAA Division II Cedarville University next year, led
all scorers with 21 points.
As usual, Lake’s defensive pressure got to its opponent, this time forcing Eastwood into 26 turnovers,
and not allowing the Eagles to score any easy baskets.
“We lost track of what we wanted to do,” Eastwood head coach Shaun Briggs said. “We wanted to run north
and south … in our offenses, get the balls down into our post. Our guards up top were doing a lot of
dribbling and crossing-over and you can’t do that against a good defensive basketball team.”
Eastwood won the junior varsity game. Emily Hayward led the Eagles, scoring 11 points, while Mallory Lee
also had 11, leading Lake.
