The Yellow Jackets’ torrid shooting and some stingy defense resulted in a 66-41 victory as Perrysburg
improved to 8-5 overall and 7-2 in the NLL.
Perrysburg shot 60 percent from the field (27-of-45) including a 6-of-13 mark from 3-point range (46
percent) in bouncing back from a disappointing loss to Springfield last weekend.
“I thought we moved the ball well. I thought we found the open area and we shot with a lot of
confidence,” Perrysburg coach Dave Boyce said.
“We wanted to make sure we got baskets in a variety of ways,” Boyce added. “We harped all week that we
need to get some fast-breaks and try to get some put-backs, we’ve got to attack the middle of the
defense and get some pull-up jumpers and make the other team guard more things. I think that’s what we
did well.”
Perrysburg’s Kevin Schenk led all players with 18 points, Karter Sell had 11 points, five rebounds and
four assists, and Matt Schimmoeller added 10 points, six rebounds and two steals to round out a solid
team effort.
“It’s another away league game that we needed to win. We just came out and played pretty well,” Schenk
said. “It definitely gives us a lot of confidence when we’re moving the ball and we’re finding open
guys. That gave us easy shots that we were able to make.”
After Rossford held an early 4-2 lead on a Travis Jones basket just 2:41 into the game, Perrysburg went
on a 17-4 run to finish the first quarter and led 19-8. Schenk scored seven points in the first quarter
while Rossford struggled to the tune of seven turnovers.
The ’Jackets continued to build their lead before halftime, with their biggest margin of the first half
at 34-16 after a Jake Pfleghaar basket with 1:33 remaining. Rossford answered with four consecutive
points, but a Sell 3-pointer from well beyond the arc as the buzzer sounded gave Perrysburg a 37-20 lead
heading into the break.
And while Perrysburg was scorching the nets, finishing 16-of-25 (64 percent) shooting in the first half,
Rossford shot just 33 percent (8-of-24).
“Perrysburg’s a good basketball team. I think they’re better than their record indicates,” Rossford coach
Brian Vorst said. “For us, it’s just a process of coming out and it’s all about how we play. We do one
or two things well, and then we do two or three things poorly.
“Against a team that executes so well, it’s just one step forward and two steps back … That’s the level
that we’re trying to get to. If we work hard we’ll get there. It’s going to take us a little longer.”

Rossford never got closer than 15 points in the second half and trailed by as many as 27 points in the
fourth quarter.
Mitchell Stewart came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs, now 3-10 overall and 1-8 in the NLL, with 14
points and seven rebounds. No other player scored more than seven points for Rossford.
“We’re not capable of scoring 20 points in a row. That’s not going to happen,” Vorst said. “But we’ve got
to go and get a four-point run, a six-point run … and just try to out-score them a little bit at a
time. That just goes with executing and doing things right every time down the floor on both ends.”
Also for Perrysburg, Tyler Gordon scored all eight of his points in the second half and had two blocks,
Pfleghaar added six points, four assists and two steals, and Devon Dunbar provided quality minutes off
the bench with five points and two steals.
The ’Jackets remain two games back of Bowling Green in the loss column of the NLL standings. Perrysburg’s
league losses were to the Bobcats and Springfield. Up next for the ’Jackets is another NLL game at
Southview next Friday.
“That was definitely a shot to the mouth we had,” Schenk said of the 56-39 loss to Springfield. “It was
important that we came back and we didn’t turn that loss into two. We came out and executed and we’re
back on track now.”
Rossford, which travels to BG next Friday, looks to regroup after losing nine of its last 10 games.
“It’s not going to get easier. We have Bowling Green next week,” Vorst said. “If we feel sorry for
ourselves and try to lick our wounds for a week we’re going to get (shellacked) … So our kids have to
come out with a little fire.”
