National Deed Service Inc., a non-government business, is mailing letters to the residents of Wood County
stating the importance of having a certified copy of a deed for their home. This business is charging
$59.50 for a certified copy of a property deed.
According to Julie Baumgardner, Wood County recorder, a certified copy of a property deed can be obtained
in her office for usually less than $10.
A certified copy from the Wood County Recorder’s office will only cost $2 per page and $1 for the
certification.
"This company is working on the angle that they will do all the work of locating and providing the
copy for you." Baumgardner said. "The Wood County Recorder’s Office will also locate and
provide the copy at a much smaller fee. In fact, National Deed Service Inc. gets their certified copies
from the appropriate recorder’s offices around the state." Although the National Deed Service, Inc.
Web site claims that obtaining a copy of your deed through the Recorder’s Office is a timely and
difficult process, Baumgardner says, "Obtaining a copy of the recorded deed in our office takes
only a matter of minutes and may even be requested through the mail."
On the Better Business Bureau’s Web site, she said, National Deed Service Inc. has been given a grade of
F.
The Wood County Recorder’s office is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and can be reached at (419) 354-9140 or
toll free at 1-866-860-4140.
