Ferris State completes sweep of BGSU hockey

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Bowling Green’s hockey team played well enough to win Saturday night.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, they had a difficult time scoring goals.
BG scored just twice and was 1-of-8 on the power play in
a 3-2 loss to Ferris State in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.
The loss kept the Falcons winless at 0-7-1 overall and 0-3-1-1 in the CCHA.
Ferris, a 5-1 winner in the series opener Friday, improved to 7-3, 2-2.
BG had 31 shots, its second-most in a game this season. Ferris had 39 shots.
But the Falcons were held to just the two goals by Ferris junior Pat Nagle, who made 29 saves, 22 during
the first two periods. He entered the game fifth nationally in goals-against average (1.48) and tied for
eighth in save percentage (.938).
Ferris had 39 shots.
“The opportunities are there,” BG coach Dennis Williams said.
The Falcons have scored only 13 goals in eight games and have scored just four power-play goals in 50
attempts.
“I’d be a lot more concerned if the chances and the shots weren’t there,” Williams said.
BG took a 1-0 lead on Kai Kantola’s goal at 5:20 of the first period, but Ferris’ Travis Ouellette scored
twice, at 8:34 and 14:31, to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs increased the lead to 3-1 on Brett Wysopal’s short-handed goal at 16:04 of the second
period.
BG closed to within 2-1 on Tomas Petruska’s goal with just 3:55 remaining in the game, but it was unable
to tie the score. Petruska also assisted on Kantola’s goal.
“It was a good effort, but we’re playing to win,” Williams said.
After killing off a 5-minute major penalty early in the second period, the Falcons failed to score on
five straight power plays in the period and even allowed the short-handed goal.
Included in the five attempts was a 5-minute penalty which was part of a 34-second two-man advantage.
Ferris’ short-handed goal came during the major penalty.
BG also couldn’t score on a 17-second two-man advantage in the last minute of the second period.
“We were moving the puck around pretty well on the power play. We had some great looks, but they’re a
great penalty-killing team,” Williams said.
Ferris is seventh nationally in goals allowed (1.78 per game) and 11th in penalty-killing (88.2 percent).

BG didn’t allow a power-play goal in five attempts.
“Our (penalty-killing) was good the whole night,” Williams said.
BG’s Nick Eno played well for the second straight game in goal with 36 saves. He made 10 saves in the
first period, 12 in the second and 14 in the third.
Eno stopped 15-of-16 shots in 24:03 in relief of Andrew Hammond on Friday.
“He played great,” Williams said. “I know he wants the first goal back, but he really settled in after
the first goal.”
