Roadwork to up bus costs in Perrysburg

PERRYSBURG – Dozens of students from Fort Meigs Elementary who normally can walk to school will now have
to be bused because of roadwork on Fort Meigs Road.
The school district will bus 48 students from McKinley Woods subdivision’s Coe Court because the sidewalk
underneath the Interstate 475 overpass will be closed. Superintendent Tom Hosler said the busing will
cost the district an additional $5,440.
The students, he said, will be added onto an existing route, but the district will have to spend more on
drivers’ salaries.
The road is expected to be closed from Aug. 26 to Dec. 11. The project, part of upgrading signals in the
area, was to have started shortly after school ended in summer. The city will be upgrading signals and
adding lanes to Fort Meigs Road and Eckel Junction as well as Louisiana Avenue and Eckel Junction. The
total cost is about $523,000.
School board president Val Hovland said Monday the school board was happy "to work with the
city."
Hosler said the district had no intention to ask the city to reimburse it for the expense. "We
certainly want to be good neighbors."
