Falcon hockey to play Michigan at new Toledo arena

Falcon hockey is headed to Toledo.
Bowling Green confirmed Wednesday its Nov. 21 home game against arch-rival Michigan will be played at
Lucas County Arena, the new arena in downtown Toledo.
The arena is a $105 million state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility that will open this fall. It will be
the home of the Toledo Walleye in the East Coast Hockey League. Capacity is 8,000.
Faceoff for the Saturday night game is 7:05.
The game in Toledo completes a home-and-home series for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals,
who will play at Michigan Nov. 20.
"It’s a great opportunity … an exciting chance to play a rival school like Michigan in an
NHL-caliber venue," BG coach Dennis Williams said.
BG will receive all of the income from ticket sales for the game and the arena will keep all of the money
from parking and concessions, said Jim Elsasser, BG’s associate athletics director for internal affairs.

The athletics department is renting the arena for $15,000, which includes all of the workers such as
ushers and ticket sellers. BG will provide the off-ice minor officials.
Ticket prices for the game haven’t been finalized, but Elsasser expected a price of $15-18 per ticket. He
also said a cheaper student ticket also would be offered.
A capacity crowd of 8,000 would generate approximately $120,000 for the athletics department minus the
cost of renting the arena, based on a $15 ticket.
BG home games against Michigan usually average crowds of 4,000, including 800 students.
Elsasser said by moving the game to Toledo, the athletics department could earn as much as an extra
$40,000 than it would by playing the game at home.
A large turnout of Michigan fans is expected to help boost attendance.
Wolverine fans always travel well and often have turned the BGSU Ice Arena into Yost Arena south. The
Toledo area also has a large number of Michigan fans.
"We’re really excited," Elsasser said. "It’s a chance for us to showcase the Falcon hockey
program in Toledo and it’s a chance for our student-athletes to play in an NHL-caliber arena."
The moving of the game to Toledo first appeared on Michigan’s Web site earlier this year, but BG still
had the game being played in the BGSU Ice Arena when it announced its schedule last month.
BG didn’t announce the change until Wednesday after all of the financial details had been finalized.
Toledo arena and BG officials are hopeful of hosting an NCAA regional. Their bid to host a regional in
2010 or 2011 was unsuccessful, but their presentation impressed NCAA officials. The Toledo bid was
turned down, in part, because the new arena hadn’t opened yet.
Instead, the 2010 Midwest Regional was awarded to Notre Dame and the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne,
Ind. The CCHA is hosting the 2011 West Regional in St. Louis at the Scottrade Center, home of the NHL’s
Blues.
Regionals have been awarded through 2011, but Toledo and BGSU are expected to bid again when the next
round of regionals are awarded.
