To the Editor: Grateful for Canada’s health care system

0

I’m a Canadian and I live in Canada; Americans who live near the US/Can border know that we, their
neighbors, can sleep at night without the worry of paying for their families’ health care, or choosing
to eat or insurance.
Last Nov. 19 in Toronto I had a (free) routine mammogram; some micro-calcifications were found: I had
another (free) mammogram and a (free) ultrasound. By Dec. 29 (Hello! the week between Christmas and New
Year’s) I was at the Princess Margaret’s Hospital’s cutting edge rapid diagnosis clinic, involving
biopsy (free) and immediate labwork (free) and at the end of that very day I saw a surgeon; (free). His
recommendation: "lumpectomy". I had it (free). The only cost to me for all the wonderful care,
attention, surgery and treatment was $10 for the day’s car park.
I am so grateful to dear Canada (and Tommy Douglas) for our health care system; but there is nothing like
that for my two daughters – why? they are Americans in the US. I pray that Barack Obama can get his
dream for all Americans, like all Canadians and the British, passed. You will all need it.
