Nominations sought for local heroes

Unsung heroes, from those who help a stranger with a simple need, to those who risk their lives, will be
honored in mid-November at the 21st annual Black Swamp Humanitarian Awards Banquet.
July 17 is the deadline for nominations for local residents to be recognized at the dinner. The
nomination should be for an incident which occurred from July, 2008 to the present time. The nominee
being recognized should be a Wood County resident, but nonresidents’ names are also accepted if the
incident of heroism occurred within Wood County during the last year.
For the first time the awards banquet is being sponsored collectively by all of the funeral homes within
Wood County.
Award recipients will be recognized Nov. 13 at Nazareth Hall in Grand Rapids Township. The four
categories for nomination are:
Life Risk, for risking one’s life to rescue or save another person or persons.
Beyond the Call of Duty, for an emergency responder who goes beyond his or her professional
responsibility to provide extraordinary measures in coming to a person’s aid.
Good Samaritan, for outstanding service to another human being, unknown to the nominee.
Service to Others, for outstanding service to another human being by providing out-of-the-ordinary
assistance.
An all-volunteer committee reviews the nominations. Nominators may be unsure which category to enter
their nominee, but the committee will make sure each nomination is placed in the most appropriate one.

Nomination forms can be obtained by calling Sentinel-Tribune Editor David C. Miller at (419) 352-4611.
