BG Christian wins Eagle Winter Classic

CELINA — The Bowling Green Christian Academy boy’s varsity basketball team captured the 2023 Eagle Winter Classic on Saturday.

Trailing by seven points heading into the fourth quarter of the first semi-final game, BGCA rallied to defeat the Senedot Stripes, 35-33, BGCA then downed host Grand Lake Christian in the championship, 46-40, after trailing at the half by a point.

Junior Caleb Kunstmann led all scorers with 13 in the Senedot game, while junior Brent Boston was the Lions’ team leader in rebounds (7), assists (3), and steals (5). Junior Hudson Thomas also had five steals for BGCA.

In the championship game against GLC, junior Will Brose was the game’s top scorer with 13. Junior Jaydin Pinkney and Brose shared top rebounding honors with seven each. Boston and Kunstmann each assisted three times, while Brose had a team best three steals. Thomas also blocked one shot.

Over the two games, Kunstmann tallied a team-best 19 points. Other double digit tournament scorers for BGCA were Boston (15), Brose (14), sophomore Jackson Hammack (12), and Thomas (11).

Boston had 12 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals over the two games to lead the Lions in those categories. Thomas added 11 rebounds and six steals, while Kunstmann also contributed five assists.

With the wins, BGCA improved to 8-4 overall. BGCA is a member of the 14-member Independent Christian Schools of Ohio Athletic Conference. The Lions are currently second in the West Division with a 2-1 record.
